Montana 700 problems in motorcycling

One year old product with the mc holder.

From the beginning I've had issues in charging the battery and occasionally shutting down. Now the problems are taking place more often, almost aa the time. I've tried to read the forum but seems that there are no permanent solutions? Or am I wrong?

  • I'm about to get my second 760i swapped by Garmin from a 750i which was swapped by Garmin from SEVEN 700i"s and second 710i swapped from a brand new 700i purchased from Ordanance Survey.

Still getting shutdown issues. They are blaming it on the mount and excessive movement damaging the contacts on the device.

They are in BRAND NEW mounts with the NEW DESIGN dampers supplied by Garmin.

They asked if there was any way the mounts could be pivoting on the bars, allowing too much movement, etc.

Considering they are in their new mounts, fitted to solid mounts AMPS mounts on the bar clamps not sure how that can happen. Even so. they supplied full powered mounts including the RAM mounting kits which you would think would be more than sufficient to work as designed.

They did offer me XT2's and InReach devices instead but the Montanas are fitted to our Enduro/Rally bikes so the XT2 mount would last the first Trail at which point some part of the foliage would hit the release button and send it flying off. Not the cleverest idea that placement.

Garmin really need to change the design to rear pins like the XT/XT2/Tread and also the DMD2 tablets. Notice there are no faults with any of those devices.......

  • I've gone through this myself.  My first 700i was mounted on the triple clamp of a KTM 690 Enduro R.  It was the first generation AMPS mount with the limited isolation mounts.  That 700i started shutting down randomly, then it would not be able to stay on when on the bike.  Using the 700i as a hand held on a hike was fine.  About the same time as I was getting a replacement 700i from Garmin, I bought a KTM Duke.  I bought a new AMPS mount and the bolt pattern was different and had more robust isolation mounts.  This mount was on a short RAM mount arm stuck offf the handle bar.  The new 700i works fine on the 690 and works fine on the Duke.  My personal hypothesis is that the old AMPS mount had piss poor vibration isolation and me mounting to the triple clamp didn't help things.  Going with a RAM arm mount adds some extra flex in things and the new AMPS mount has better isolation as well.  Vibration kills these things and finding the newer AMPS mounts and making the whole mount systems as flexible as possible is your best bet.

My Garmin support experience was tragiccally bad.  My support person put their hands up saying it was not their fault because I told them I installed the Garmin myself.  "If only" it was professionally installed this wouldn't have happened.  Washed their hands of the issue casting the problem onto the self-installer.

  • "Professionally installed" - have heard this before, its not real.

Ask them to provide a list of qualified installers in your location and what certifications directly from Garmin they hold and what rate they normally expect to encounter.  When details are important, they won't have any.

Moto dealers generally know nothing about Garmin's, notwithstanding Montanas, to expect them to be "certified installers" that would even care or know about vibration isolation as much as you do is a stretch.

You could call yourself a professional if you work and maintain your own bike.
