Montana 700i Cannot Unlock Map

Today, MY Montan 700i asked if I want to update. I was out in the field and I said yes.  Now I get the screen "Cannot Unlock Map: D9643050A, which I believe is City Navigator North America.

On my files under Garmin it shows the followng:

Garmin
  D9643050A.img
  D9644050A.img
  GPX
  SQL
id.txt

Everything was purchased via Garmin on my 700i.
In Garmin Express it shows in the purchased area, no content.

How can I fix this warning?

  • Hello I would recommend first seeing "Can't Unlock Maps" Message on a Garmin Outdoor Handheld. If you go into Garmin Express to the purchased tab please make sure it indicates you are signed in and that you are signing in with the same email address account you purchased the maps under.

  • I have the same issue.

logged in and followed another suggestion to eject the device after the downloads.  I have 10 hours into trying to solve this.

  • I have noticed that same issue of not able to eject Garmin after downloading some Geocaches.  My SD card is able to Eject, but not my Garmin.  I've tried it over and over without success.  It states that it cannot dismount because another file is using the Garmin.  The only item that might be using the file is my Finder, which is always being used by my Mac computer.  There is only three ways to get my Garmin Device off of my computer.  1) Pull the USB coord out (shows warning), 2) Force Quit 3) let my computer go to sleep, then it will stop the device and auto eject, (also shows a  warning).

This seems to have started after updating to Sequoia 15.

  • Based on forum traffic, Garmin support for Macs is less than stellar.

Newer versions of the 7x0i firmware use MTP, not USB. You can check this from Main Menu > Setup > System > Advanced Setup > Interface. Older firmware will show USB. Newer firmware will show MTP.

The good news is that if it IS MTP, there is no danger in just pulling the plug. If it is still USB, and if you WROTE anything to the device, it is possible that pulling the plug will corrupt the file system on the device. This depends on whether or not the Mac "buffers" writes to the device. (Windows no longer does this by default, but I have no idea about a Mac).

Since the problem started with an O/S update, it is almost certainly something on the Apple side. Open a (Garmin) support ticket. But it will probably devolve into finger-pointing.

  • It is incorrect to say that firmware updates have changed Montana 7X0i devices from USB to MTP interface. While some other outdoor handhelds, such as the GPSMAP 67 series, use MTP, Montana 700/700i/750i use mass storage mode.

  • All I can say is that the interface choice in the UI IS "MTP". If that does not translate to MTP under the hood, then there is a bigger problem.

  • Is Garmin Express perhaps running in the background? If so it could have some files on the internal storage of the Montana in use. You can disable this running in the background by going into Express preferences and disabling "Always keep Garmin Express running in the background.", and then quitting Express.

  • MTP is an interface option; but the Montana 700-series devices also have Garmin Serial and Garmin Spanner as options. Garmin Serial will put the device into USB mass storage mode when the device is plugged in to a computer. Garmin Spanner gives you the option of putting the device into USB mass storage mode or continuing to interact with the device while it is plugged in to a computer.
