• Wow that’s an excellent and comprehensive review. What a discovery that the mini 3 should fail on an emergency sos transmission. Obviously Garmin does virtually little or no testing of their software before they release new products. Sorry to say at $700 for an upgrade from the mini 2 it’s just no way. In a couple of years a newer model will be out hopefully with loadable maps and the mini 3 would just be a $700 paper weight then. I’m sure satellite voice and photo messaging will be coming to cell phones soon.
  • I have to disagree. The first update was massive. Meaning they absolutely did testing. Granted it was apparent that they were on a tight deadline. I'm not sure I would trust the device 100% until a couple of updates though.

Also, I'm not sure how big a deal maps are on the device. In most cases, you will already have a phone and maybe even a watch. While I feel that mapping would be  a nice to have feature, it was never really the point of the Mini. And it would be a huge battery drain.

I'll be able to give some honest feedback when I thruhike this March.

  • I agree. Seems like a tight deadline issue other than attitude.

Having said that, I will NOT trust my H1i and Mini3+ at the moment if I have to venture into wilderness for more than a couple of hours. Give it some time and I'm sure the bugs will be eliminated in due time, but not currently.

  • What really is missing on M3+ is a barometric altimeter! That was a bad move not to add one in a $/€ 499 outdoor device! That is really not up to date!!!
