My GPS is acting up when it tries to recalculate my route. It keeps trying to drag me back to the exact spot where I missed a turn, or sometimes even all the way back to my starting point! I'm wondering if this is a software bug or just a bad setting. It's pretty annoying when you can't trust your GPS. Hopefully, someone here has a fix for thi

    I’ve now conducted several tests using maps other than the included TopoActiv maps.

    During the tests, I always made sure that only one map layer was active at a time. I performed all tests using the Hiking profile. The destination was selected directly on the map.

    First, I tested OSM maps from https://www.freizeitkarte-osm.de/garmin/de/index.html.
    Result: These maps behave exactly the same way as the included TopoActiv maps during navigation.
    The route recalculation feature when deviating from the route is still unusable.

    Next, I inserted my Garmin Topo Germany SD card into the device (www.garmin.com/.../
    Although the map is quite old, Garmin still sells it, and it's supposed to be compatible with the H1.

    That’s when things got really frustrating.

    After selecting a destination on the map and starting navigation, the device froze. I could only get it working again by pressing and holding the power button. I was able to reproduce this behavior several times. After restarting the device, however, the route was calculated and active.

    But it gets even worse. As soon as I strayed from the calculated route and the device started recalculating, it crashed and restarted. This happened every time it recalculated.

    Result: Although Garmin lists the map as compatible with the device, it is completely unusable and consistently causes the device to freeze and crash.

    I then did something you’re not really supposed to do. I switched the map layer back to the TopoActiv maps and then removed the SD card (Garmin Topo Germany) from the device while it was still turned on. In this state, when it recalculated the route, I received the error message “Route calculation error.”

    My personal conclusion from these tests: Even after so many software releases, the device is still unable to provide satisfactory and stable navigation.

    Bedankt voor de uitgebreide test, het vreemde is dat het navigeren voor update 12.06 het prima deed. Er is volgens mij nog geen reactie van Garmin, voor deze best wel flinke bug.

      is this something you/support could take a look at? Judging from this thread there are multiple users having issues with route/course recalculation when deviating from the initial route/course.

    Happy to share additional info if needed.

    I was trying out my H1i+ for car navigation as a backup during holidays. I used the citynavigator map and driving as activity. I did not preload a route, but chose the destination on the map. The device wanted me to return to the point were I left the calculated route. After approximately 20 of 50 kilometers I gave up. 

    Now I tried a navigation during a hike and made screenshots.

    I almost reached the destination, but I still got the prompt to return.

    Shortly before I reached the destination I finally got a recalculation.

    After approximately 500 meters I got a new calculation. Maybe Garmin made in s/w 12.08 a wrong threshold for recalculation, 500 meters instead of 50 meters.

    I went of course again as the magenta line shows, but .....

    .... here it shows that there is no more a navigation. Another bug.

    Hello. I can understand the frustration, if you are having trouble when the device is recalculating the route. For this, I would initially recommend ensuring the mapping is up to date. And if you have not already, I would also recommend powercycling the device.

    thank you for taking care of this. I will answer your email directly. Just a few words here.

    I don't think that uploading a video of a 20-minute hike is an adequate way to demonstrate the bug. It is also quite inconvenient to walk while recording a video. My screenshots above should provide sufficient evidence.

    Today, I repeated the test and, after leaving the calculated route, eventually got a route calculation error.

    During the same hike, I started a second navigation and was able to reach the destination from the opposite direction without any new routing being triggered. There was not even a confirmation that I had reached the destination.

    The H1 frequently recalculates, sometimes after only 40 metres, but in these cases no new route is actually calculated. This appears to be the core of the problem.
