Recalculating

My GPS is acting up when it tries to recalculate my route. It keeps trying to drag me back to the exact spot where I missed a turn, or sometimes even all the way back to my starting point! I'm wondering if this is a software bug or just a bad setting. It's pretty annoying when you can't trust your GPS. Hopefully, someone here has a fix for thi

  • Unfortunately it seems that this is the way recalculation on the H1 works. It’s quite annoying and the reason I don’t use navigation with routing enabled. Hopefully Garmin will change how recalculation works in a future update. Other devices like Edge cycling computers can route you to a logical point to rejoin your course, so no clue why this hasn’t been implemented on the H1.

  • Same here. This is a new bug that was introduced with Firmware Version 12.08.

When the navigation option 'Advanced settings' > 'Off course recalculation' is set to 'Automatic', you will now be routed to the point at which you left the calculated route, even when you are very close to your destination. Older firmware versions may have done this as well, but at some point they would calculate a route to your destination.

(Workaround): To revert to the behaviour prior to V12.08, set the "Off course Recalculation" option to "Prompted". Now, when you deviate by more than approximately 70 metres from the calculated route, you will be prompted to recalculate. If you select 'Recalculate', the device will (surprisingly) do a better job of getting you to your destination.

  • Ah great info. I remember having the issue in older firmware versions as well, not sure which ones though.

And at some time after deviating several times the H1 would just ignore the loaded course at all and calculate a path directly to the end of the course. That’s when I stopped using routing enabled navigation. But with the automatic recalculation workaround I might try it again.

  • Just to be clear, I'm not talking about navigation when a course is loaded. When I want to follow a course, I switch navigation off (for several reasons).

This bug is about navigating to a waypoint! No course is loaded!

  • Ok would be interesting to see whether your workaround also works for course navigation. Or have you already tried that?

  • I went cycling today, about 45 km. I don't know what happened, but my device was working perfectly. I didn't change anything in my settings. Route recalculation happened automatically. It took a while and all data fields dropped to zero, but after that, all the data fields came back. Maybe Garmin tweaked the software."

  • Vandaag gewandeld, herberekening op verzoek gezet geen verschil ten opzichte van automatisch, zelfs op de locatie aangekomen stuurt het apparaat je terug naar waar je de route hebt verlaten.

  • After reading your comment, I walked a 7-kilometer loop twice today.
Once using the “Automatic” navigation option and once using the “prompted” option. This time, I didn't notice any differences.
On both walks, whenever I deviated from the calculated route, the device tried to guide me back to the point where I had strayed from the route.
Even just before reaching my destination, it suggested a detour of over one kilometer.

I’ve walked this route many times to test the device, and the navigation has never been as bad as it is with the new firmware.

I’ll try it with different maps over the next few days.

  • When I started about this issue, I was indeed walking, but yesterday biking, like I said before, was no problem at all. I'm going to go for a walk again tomorrow and hope that navigation keeps working like it's supposed to. I'll post tomorrow how I experienced it.
