H1 & Bluechart Maps

Has anyone had any success using Bluechart maps with the H1, I tried when I first bought the H1, but couldn't get it to install (via Garmin Express), Garmin support couldn't help either.

That was several firmware versions ago, but Garmin support are giving conflicting answers, the website says it is compatible, but a reply from Garmin support was hedging, I wonder if its the SD card that is the problem ?

I was intending to use the H1 as a backup GPS when sailing offshore in Europe.

  • Couple of things…

    1. BlueChart G3 maps are defo compatible with the H1 series. I’m running them.

    2. In my humble opinion Navionics on a recent iPhone (or better iPad) is far superior beast compared to BlueChart running on a the relatively tiny (and well frankly compared to an iPhone etc) not terrifically either bright or inferior resolution screen on a H1

    3. The authors issue is down to Garmin Express on Mac being a bit of a dog compared to the PC version.

  • Garmin support have admitted they do not know why Garmin Express won’t work with any of my 3 Macs. The software is very old and tired looking. They have taken log files etc to look into it, so that’s a start, but I’m pretty sure Mac users are in the (small) minority.

I have used Navionics on a boat with a tablet, downsides are mainly battery life, general robustness, and screens being unsuitable for viewing in sunlight, also probably the GNSS on the H1 is superior to most phones or tablets, but I’m no expert, that said maps are cheaper , and constantly updated during their licence life on Navionics.

But as the (UK) sailing training industry inches toward phasing out paper maps , having a robust backup GNSS with decent battery life, becomes more important IMHO and if you already have an H1 it fits the bill. In a ideal world you could simply buy a Navionics  licence similar to the Outdoor Maps +

  • This ended up working on PC for me. I did download to internal storage though but all was well.

  • Oh the issue is not the maps, Garmin confirmed they work. It’s the software , no idea how long till a fix.
