Auto Start & Auto Pause

I went for a long walk today as a test and the 67i didn't do what I expected. I had Auto Start turned off and then manually started recording when I began to walk. I had Auto Pause turned on.

I started at the green arrow in the attached image. At the black arrow I stopped and put my jacket in my backpack. I walked to the red arrow then turned around and returned to start. When I returned to start I stopped the recording.

I found that the only path recorded was from the start to the spot I stopped to take my jacket off. It also added a straight line back to the start point from this point.

The other weird thing is that it added three random waypoints (beyond where recording seemed to have stopped) without any input from me. One of which was in the bush, nowhere near the path I took (in the general vicinity).

The entire episode has left me confused. Something to do with how Auto Start and Auto Pause work perhaps? As for the phantom Waypoints, no idea what occurred there.

    Auto Pause works based on a configured speed threshold. If the measured speed is below that threshold, the recording is paused, if it is above the threshold the recording is resumed.

    So the question is: what speed have you set for Auto Pause? You can find it under Main Menu > Setup > Recording > Auto Pause.

    Personally for hiking I never use Auto Pause because the speed can be too low to make it work reliably. So I always manually pause a recording when needed.

    As for the waypoints, not sure what happened there. Afaik the GPSMAP will not create waypoints automatically. How did you carry your GPSMAP? Could it be accidental button presses of the Mark and Enter buttons?

    Thanks. Auto Pause was set at 0.05km/hr, an extremely low speed. Therefore I expected that when I started walking again after stopping to take my jacket off and reorganize my pack, the device would then automatically recommence recording my journey. However it seems to have completely stopped recording at that point in time. Maybe it is Auto Stop rather than Auto Pause?

    As for the phantom waypoints, I guess it is possible that a button was pressed while in my pack. However my pack remained undisturbed with the device inside a pocket for the the rest of the journey after I paused, so I think errant button presses are highly unlikely.

    If you keep your device in your pack I highly recommend using Key Lock to prevent any unwanted button presses.

    Auto Pause should indeed start when the threshold has been reached, but I haven’t tested it in a while so if you consistently have issues with it you should contact Garmin support.

    But as I said for hiking I think it is better to manually pause and resume recording. When stationary and in difficult reception conditions (trees, buildings etc) the GPSMAP may record it is moving due to GPS drift, leading to false starts and stops with such a low speed threshold.

    Thanks. I will test further. It seems recording stopped completely when I paused and didn't restart again when I started moving again, despite having a very low threshold speed in the setting. The key lock is a good idea. Upon further reflection, can't think of any other way that those waypoints could have been added apart from a inadvertent button presses in my pack
