Garmin GPSMap67i data ouput

Hello forum, I have a question for you.  I have just upgraded to GPSMap67i from 66s due to better battery and satellite communication in one.  However, it appears I have gone backwards for what I require from this device.  Previously I could store up to 600+ waypoints to navigate and identify when needed, and import polylines for property boundaries, etc.  However, now have to create collections in Explore, not a deal breaker but require re-organization of my data, which may be a good thing.  Where I come unstuck is when creating waypoints.  On any given day, might create up to 50-100 waypoints based on features in the landscape.  Important information recorded include location coordinates, date, time, altitude and description.  On my 66s I used DNR Garmin to extract waypoints and tracks into csv file and import into GIS.  However, 67i does not communicate with DNR Garmin due to restrictions on output communication (good one Garmin).  Data exported only as a .gpx file appears useless, when imported into spreadsheet (i.e xls / csv file) coordinates in lat/long and that's it, no date, projected coordinates, time, tag, anything.  Tracklog seems to export ok, but again, missing critical information.  I have tried numerous ways to export data, but come to a dead end each time.

I used to use Basecamp to manage my data, which worked fine, and happy to learn Explore, although slightly different approach to managing data. Regards Michael

  • I tried out the DNRGPS application (successor of DNRGarmin), and I was able to use the program successfully with my GPSMAP 67. Waypoints I created on my GPSMAP show up in the program including comments, elevation and date/time.

So I'm not sure why it wouldn't work for you? Maybe try out DNRGPS instead of DNRGarmin? Unless you have a specific reason not to upgrade of course.

  • Hi there Jungle Jim, thank you for your response.  I incorrectly listed DNR Garmin in my initial post, but in fact have been using DNR GPS for the past few years.  For some reason, the software does not recognise the 67i unit, does not locate it if I choose Find GPS.  I thought it may be an issue with restrictions on 3rd party software accessing the unit.  I have re-installed the program just in case there was an update (currently running v6.1.0.6. 27 Nov 2018.  Unsure why I cannot find the unit, in comparison to you???

  • There's not really a restriction for 3rd party software accessing the GPSMAP 67, but the way the device can be access has changed. Previous models supported the USB Mass Storage mode, where the unit would show up as an external drive. For the GPSMAP 67 this mode has been removed and been replaced with MTP which is a different way of accessing the files on the device. Not all software is compatible with accessing the device via MTP though.

Does the GPSMAP 67 show up in windows explorer when you connect it to your computer?

In DNRGPS I selected Find GPS from the menu and after a couple of seconds the program recognized the unit and allowed for downloading waypoints and tracks.

Also note that recorded activities are stored in FIT file format only by default. You can change the Output Format under Setup > Recording > Advanced Setup to FIT and GPX, this will save future recorded activities in both GPX and FIT formats. Previously recorded activities you can convert by selecting them from Recorded Activities list and choosing the option to convert to Track from the Menu.

  • Hello again JungleJim, thank you again.  The GPSMap67i icon is viewable in Windows Explorer when connected, but interestingly does not show up as a device to remove on USB icon in bottom right hand corner.  I think my GPSMap66s was in both Fit and GPX format, but will check format for 67i.  When I first connected the 67i it was viewable and able to download data, but this only occurred 3-4 times before no longer recognised by DNRGPS program.

  • It's correct that the GPSMAP 67i will not show up as a removable device with the USB icon in the notification area. That only applies to devices using USB Mass Storage Mode. With MTP devices you can safely disconnect the device at any time.

It sounds more like a DNRGPS issue than an issue with the GPSMAP, especially when it shows up (and is accessible) in Windows Explorer. I'd suggest to contact the maintainers of DNRGPS and ask them for help.

As a workaround you can always copy the waypoint and track files from the GPSMAP via Windows Explorer and process those files by loading them into DNRGPS with the Load From File option. Not ideal, but could work as a temporary solution.

  • Thanks JungleJim, I have also encountered an error message in Explore Web version indicating no syncing to unit. However, if I create waypoints / routes and import from PC into Explore Web, sync to Explore App and then sync App to 67i, I get data imported into unit.  Does not seem ideal, but works for now.
