Garmin 66i shuts down in Expedition mode

I've updated my Garmin 66i via Garmin Express before going for a week in the bush only to find that when you go into Expedition mode the green light flashes indicating it's tracking but when you press the power button on it does a full restart and there is no record of my previous tracks. Logged a job with Garmin support Ref: 24590908K0 who basically came back and said "It seems like there is no workaround at this time, other than not using the Expedition Mode feature." Well that's really unhelpful when you rely on the expedition mode. Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Unit is flashing green light every 4 seconds but it is not tracking and does a complete reboot when you turn on as if it had been powered down. Tried a number of options suggested that did not work.

  • well this is presumably what it should do.

It goes to deep sleep. It will wake up only abt every half hour to check GPS position. It will do only quite basic logging of position. It might decide to do a track point over Iridium when position moved far away from last position. It certainly will not attempt to do any 10min tracking as this would use much more power the without exp mode on.

It reboots by itself after abt half hour and will then decide what is reasonable to do.

The current problem is the full reboot, which helps to avoid some errors after restoring probably, but might prevent any useful function on the other hand.

  • There's no need to complicate the problem with conjecture and bs..!!

Expedition mode - a critical function to a subset of users - previously worked (as designed/documented). Now, after the recent firmware update, it doesn't, instead it crashes when the user wakes the device. This is 100% repeatable on any device using this firmware. Anyone who has previously used expedition mode (ie. understands how it works) will see this immediately. Needs to be fixed. Period.

  • yes it is repeatable, but appart from that it takes now much longer time until the device is ready for some manual work, nothing else did change very much.

Earlier, the crashes were unpredictable,( the ticket abt it in fact still open)

now it reboots simply, thus eliminating any damaged gpx files . This was a pain earlier, as gpx files with wrong position/time entries in it were quite useless. At least this is now cured.

Appart from the full reboot after each restoring (automatically or manually) , no obvious changes I can see.

The times when entering exp mode blocked the device completely or the battery was drained within 30min are over. At least this all seems to be solved.

  • Support told me they found an issue and it should be fixed with the next update.

  • Great, thanks for relaying the update. Look forward to this dropping.

  • Thank goodness for that and update, I can't wait to get rid of that bug !

  • I do not think this is entirely correct. The unit WILL record points at the specified send interval (10 minutes or whatever). I don't remember if it sends them at the designated interval, or if it buffers them up to transmit more than one in a single "session" with the Iridium networkj.

  • We're very sorry to hear that your GPSMAP 66i is having issues Resuming from Expedition Mode.

We sincerely appreciate you reaching out about this and we've reported it to our Engineering team for investigation. They're working hard on a solution, which should be implemented with an upcoming software update, but we don't currently have a time-frame to provide on it's release at this point.

There is no workaround at this time, other than not using the Expedition Mode feature.

  • Ok Thanks for letting us know I look forward to it being repaired
