Garmin 66i shuts down in Expedition mode

I've updated my Garmin 66i via Garmin Express before going for a week in the bush only to find that when you go into Expedition mode the green light flashes indicating it's tracking but when you press the power button on it does a full restart and there is no record of my previous tracks. Logged a job with Garmin support Ref: 24590908K0 who basically came back and said "It seems like there is no workaround at this time, other than not using the Expedition Mode feature." Well that's really unhelpful when you rely on the expedition mode. Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • That’s bad. Have they said it is a general prob/known issue of the new fw? Or have they just no plan and that was their advice to prevent the  issue for you? Not a good advice if you will go out in the bush and the device is behaving bad with this functionality. Sorry, can’t help, have only a mini 2 here with me.

  • Hi Volker yes no problem before upgrade, expedition mode worked perfectly so there is definitely some issue with the new upgrade (wish I didn't upgrade) not my device. They did not say if it is a wider issue and offered no solution.  Thanks anyway Mike

  • You could try to manually replicate Expedition mode by changing settings within the Setup menu. It's more cumbersome, but will get you the longer battery life. For example, go to Display within Setup and turn on Battery Save. Go to Recording within Setup and if in Auto choose Least Often or choose even less often by using one of the Auto alternatives and choose long intervals.

  • That's good to know as an alternative option thanks very much.

  • I prefer to manually reduce power consumption, item by item, when necessary, rather than use Expedition Mode.

Another parameter within Setup is System and then Satellite. You can reduce power consumption by choosing GPS (instead of GPS and Galileo) and turning off WAAS/EGNOS. Your navigation performance will be slightly negatively impacted, but it will improve battery life.

  • Ok I'll give that a go thanks

  • I think I have the same problem with my 66i, seems to shut down, if I press the power button (have never used the Expedition mode before) and reboots. Sent a note to Garmin support.

Or I haven’t understood the Expedition mode, yet.

  • Yes that's exactly my problem it should not power down when you enter expedition mode. I will be very interested to know what they say as that is a key feature for tracking whilst extending battery life

  • when entering exp mode, 66i should go to some kind of deep sleep. The indication is that the LED flashes abt every 4sec green.

When the unit feels it should do something, it will attempt to wake up. This however results in full reboot, either there is something crashing or it is done by purpose. The point is, that depending on some settings and largely also on number of maps installed, the reboot can take something close to the 2 min and one has just few secs to kepp the unit on or using it somehow reasonably.

In some earlier FW versions I did experience problems with GPS fix after wake up from exp mode, which lead to a crash in itself thereafter. I have supplied lot of details and log files to support, the dev were not able to fix it.

This seems to be fixed now, but by rebooting the device completely it becomes less useful.

No idea if this was the only way to avoid some crashes after restoring from exp mode.
