inReach Tracking Setup

Within the "Setup" menu and under "Tracking", one selection is called ""Link with Recording".

This selection is not discussed within the Owner's Manual.

I assume that when turned on, it links inReach Tracking with Recording Controls.

I have it selected to off, and when I start Tracking, I get a message informing me that this will start Recording Controls.

And it does.

What's up with that?

  • something looks wrong at your side

here, when I do the same, when i resume, the tracking starts again.

Set the link recording-tracking on and possibly switch off-on the device.

Manually stopping and starting was never the problem, this did work from beginning, it was rather when one of the tasks was starting automatically by some other reason, then it did not quite do what it should. Not sure, there can be also some interference, at least with some previous firmware, between this link function and tracking autostart.

But this seems to be all ok now.

  • HA!  Okay, you have actually answered my original question!

Yes, I had the link recording-tracking switch on off.  I assumed if I started Tracking it would NOT start Recording because switch was off.

But apparently, the switch is not for that purpose.

When I turn the switch on, my device acts as you describe when Resuming a Recording. That is when the link comes into play.  Not at all obvious, but thanks!

  • With Link with Recording "on", iR sent "track points" and activity recording are supposed to start/stop together. The side you choose to use for control is not supposed to matter. This was a response to the ridiculously complicated interactions that nobody could understand (sort of as described by the table referenced elsewhere in this thread).

My experience is that it mostly works. And is MUCH better than the behavior with this feature off. However, I STILL check "from both sides" after I make any change. Just to be sure it "did what I meant". And I have not tested corner case features like auto-pause. YMMV, but I still recommend caution and double-checking.

  • Ok. My device behaves as described in GPSrChive.

Starting a Recording does NOT start Tracking, no matter the position of the switch. Starting Tracking starts a Recording, no matter the position of the switch.

That seemed weird to me, so that's why I posted this thread. But that's the way it is.

The switch comes into play when you stop Tracking (which pauses Recording) and one wants to restart both.

  • This is likely a bug. If you are interested in getting it fixed, open a support ticket. I have long since given up on any of this working in any sane way. Describing how it does work is useful. But it's not a substitute for it working right.

  • >However, I STILL check "from both sides" after I make any change. Just to be sure it "did what I meant".<

same here, since confusing functionality last year, I got the instinctive habit to check quickly if both are on before starting trip

It usually works now, I think they did do some correction there even I do not remamber to have read something in change logs.

  • where, means under which chapter did you find the description in GPSrChive?

  • I'll drink to that!

Actually, as long as the logic is logical, and is explained, I'm generally okay.

In this case, if one looks at the Owner's Manual, it doesn't even state that the function exists within the menu.
