inReach Tracking Setup

Within the "Setup" menu and under "Tracking", one selection is called ""Link with Recording".

This selection is not discussed within the Owner's Manual.

I assume that when turned on, it links inReach Tracking with Recording Controls.

I have it selected to off, and when I start Tracking, I get a message informing me that this will start Recording Controls.

And it does.

What's up with that?

  • This was one of the much confusing options in the past. The problem is, that in the past it did not work as expected and still in some cases it does not even with the current firmware.

Yes, the idea is, when you start recording, also tracking is switched on.

The behavior of the logic behind it is somehow complex, there used to be even a colorful table to show under which circumstances it should word and when not. (not sure, some links to it ca be found probably in the forum here)

Following some negative experiences like tracking did not switch on automatically when new recording started, I did file number of tickets with lot of documentation and screen shots, but never got real 'solved' answer.

Since then I have the option selected, but check each time new recording started also that tracking is really on.

  • I think the way it is setup now, is once you start Tracking, you also start Recording (not the other way around).

It does this even if you have selected for that to not be the case. The "switch" doesn't seem to work.

(I also have my Recording set to start the Trip Computer. So when I start Tracking, the Recording and Trip Computer also start.)

  • no, it is supposed to work both ways, usually works, but sometimes it fails because of some other logic inputs.

Meanwhile, when I do my test, I start new recording and quite reliably the tracking is started as well. The opposite way it was always less problem, starting tracking did always start recording as well.

There used to be some text in the manuals about it, but probably after many complains it was solved practically, the text was removed so nobody is promising some functionality any more.

  • Ok. My Recording has never started the Tracking.

  • the table I found, but we have to ask atlas_cached if it is still valid

  • I don't understand what it means for inReach Track to be Active? It's either on or off.

  • track on = on, I don't see anything having to do with active.

  • well when tracking is switched on, it is active.

some kind of language used by engineers

With the current software, when the link recording-tracking is on, then when recording is stopped by the stop button, the tracking will be off also, the green mark beside the tracking icon will not be present.

When the recording is again activated by the resume button, the tracking will be on (active) and the green mark next to the tracking icon will be present.

when you stop tracking by its controll, you will see that recording icon on the menu has changed to kind of yellow. You will then find again the resume button in the recording menu. You can now start recording and tracking with this resume button,

    or

you can activate the tracking, in which case the recording will start again.

    This did work always.

The problems were more around starting when 66i rebooted, the recording started then usually, but it did not start the tracking at same time. I  assume there were some bugs in the software, not enough wait times during start or so. No real idea. Can just say, that failures are rather seldom now with current software.

BTW: do you have 9.20 on it?

  • Yes, I have 9.20. Most of what you wrote I have experienced (even if the "link recording-tracking" is off).

However, when I stop Tracking by its control, a message states that Recording will be paused, which it does.

When I select Resume within Recording, Recording resumes, but not Tracking.
