Birdseye Discontinued

Saw the Birdseye subscription has been discontinued. Does anyone know what this mean long term for the 66i and loading Birdseye onto it? Basecamp has been put out to pasture but I still use it so am also wondering if Birdseye will be done through Explorer or if it's going to be removed from the handhelds altogether.

  • I understand the difference. The information I provided is not incorrect (although it apparently does not meet your expectations). My point was that there IS an existing option for custom maps. It certainly does not have the same full capabilities. But it has uses, and not everybody is aware of it.

If you want to complain further about the loss of Birdseye, I suggest opening a support ticket. It won't do any good (in the sense that all they'll do is tell you "sorry, that's the way it is".) But the more people who complain, the more likely they are to reconsider the policy change.

You can also phrase it as a suggestion, or suggest a broader device unlocking, here: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/forms/ideas/

Many on the forums have pointed out that the suggestions link behaves like a black hole bit bucket. No acknowledgement from Garmin, and never any apparent action. No idea if it really does any good, but we work with the channels we have.

I do think it unlikely that they will do what you ask with regard to the locked proprietary formats. Garmin sells cartography. Their model has always been "lock it to the device" (unless purchased on an SD card). That's not going to change. And they're not going to do anything to compromise that revenue stream. Just MO.
