Preset show as empty on GPSMAP 66i

Hi!

We are using a GPSMAP 66i with a proffesional acount.

The content of preset messages (set in https://explore.garmin.com/) does not show in neither the explore app:

nor on the 66i:

I wonder what the trick is to make the content of the presets actually show up (like on the Garmin Inreach Explorer Plus).

We really should not have to carry a note to remind us what these messages are!

Cheers,

Lars

  • Hello, I am having the same issues. Works fine on the explorer + but I've just bought 10 X 66i units. Did this get resolved?

  • If you have tried the suggestions above in this thread, open a support ticket.

Note that the suggestions above are based on a personal account. I don't have access to a professional account, so I am unable to try anything myself.

  • Yes I did solve this. If I recall correctly by making an individual Garmin user account for that particular unit and then log into the Garmin Explore App with that and update the presets.

  • That would be painful for an professional account with a large number of devices. I'd still open a support ticket to see if there is a less painful method.

  • Luckily I only had one 66i to do this with. Here is what Garmin support answered me: "When you are logging into the Explore app to sync your device, are you signing in the the user credentials of the user the device is assigned to rather than the administrator login? If you do not sign in as the device user, the correct information will not load to the device or the app."

  • I also asked Garmin how to manage let say 150 devices this way. I was told that may be one there will be some kind of management software, but for the time being there is no way then pair each device with a phone and the particular account of the user

No way to manage a fleet of 66i

  • Thanks Lars this does make sense. I can get one device working well with the app and that one is registered to me. It would be great if there was an admin version of the app and maybe there will be one day.

I also found another workaround where you upload a configuration file via USB onto the device that seems to be working.

My current problem is that i'm trying to set up devices to hand out to people and I want them tested and working. But it seems that ill need to get them to install the app  and sync when I give it to them and then test.

The config option is documented at this link in case anyone (including future me) needs it

  • I guess this is why people use third party inreach management companies

  • Hello. yes i've tried the above options but LArs has some good suggestions below and i also found a way to manually upload a config file which seem to work, but is not ideal.

  • yes, one can pass an inreach profile to the device, this will for example contain the preset part. But it will still need the sync because also for example the address book  needs to be copied to the device etc.

This was easy with older devices, as the sync was done with usb cable in few seconds. This is why we at our organization use in productive side old delorme trackers. For current products like 66i, there seems to be no way of maintenance existing. It means each unit has to be paired with a phone and then wait, wait, wait until it is all synced with the server. From my experience with 66i, after a mission of about one week, it takes some 4-5 hrs to sync all to the server. This is mainly due to the low speed of the BT.

Such sync with usb cable takes abt 40sec.

If there are 40 units to service after a mission, you can imagine where is the difference.
