In the GPSMAP 66i tracking setup menu there is an on/off option for "Link with Recording." I didn't see anything in the 2019 manual explaining this or even listing the option. Does someone know what this option does?

Hi,
I have that setting on my 700i. I believe it starts and stops tracking automatically when activity recording starts and stops.
Chris.
The intent of this setting is to tie Tracking/Recording together in such a way that when enabled Starting/Stopping one will always impact the other setting in the same manner with no dialogs to interact…
but it simply does not work this way. On 66i IR tracking stops or does not start at all at random times. Disaster for use as safety device
I had 2 bad experiencies so far.
Link with Recording=ON
IR Tracking is set to automatic
When I switch on the 66i, the activity tracking is on. The IR tracking does not start however.
This will definitely fail any certification as safety device.
sure I have filed a ticked, with all details, scrn shots etc. No answer so far, I do not even expect one.
I agree, skyeye, there's lots of room for improvement in the 66i. Especially in its user interface. Someday, it will probably be a safety device that a 12-year-old can operate reliably. It's not there yet.
But given the dearth of alternatives, I think it is a great alternative for safety and navigation, even though it's interface is so quirky it requires constant attention to ensure it's doing what I expect. What other half-pound package will tell me where I am on a topographic chart, keep a record of my path, let others elsewhere know where I am and do all that for a week without being recharged?
I am hopeful Garmin will soon realize the value of its monopoly and invest more in the improvement of this machine. Until three years ago, people in the backcountry saw my IR devices as useless curiosities. Starting about two years ago, everyone has one.
We will have to postpone or cancel the order of few hundred of 66i due to this incident and few other problems. We will remain to use delorme devices and 64s gps for the moment until someone is considering some work on the firmware.
I would at least like some answer or other comment from garmin support to such serious matter, but silence is all I get.
