Undocumented setting in tracking setup

In the GPSMAP 66i tracking setup menu there is an on/off option for "Link with Recording." I didn't see anything in the 2019 manual explaining this or even listing the option. Does someone know what this option does?

Hi,

I have that setting on my 700i. I believe it starts and stops tracking automatically when activity recording starts and stops.

The intent of this setting is to tie Tracking/Recording together in such a way that when enabled Starting/Stopping one will always impact the other setting in the same manner with no dialogs to interact…

but it simply does not work this way. On 66i IR tracking stops or does not start at all at random times. Disaster for use as safety device

I do not think that is correct. That is what it SOUNDS like it should do. But I have it in my head that it does something else. Let me see if I can find my notes on this.

I was wrong. It theoretically ties activity recording and iR tracking together in such a way that they both start/stop together. And without the need to interact with dialogs. This is the definitive explanation:

I was confused because I was actually hoping for the opposite - that this provided a way to completely decouple the two. It does not do that.

I just talked to Garmin tech suppoert. Grant said, if the option is off, local GPS recording on the device will start when InReach tracking is started but not vice versa. If that option is on, then starting either InReach tracking or local GPS track recording will start the other.

You're referring to a bug. AFAIK, the bug is not related to this setting.

If you have not already done so, open a support ticket regarding the bug. The more people who report it, the better the chances that it will be fixed sooner rather than later.

Can you be more specific, skyeye. Does the problem exist when the "Link with Recording" option discussed here is enabled or disabled? Also, when you say "stops," do you mean that after you started IR tracking the device later shows that it is not tracking?
