Half of my included Topo map is missing

Hi, I've got a 66i in UK.

It came with bundled Topo Europe maps.

Somehow I seem to have lost half of the map..I only see TopoActive Europe 2019.20, North East in my map list.

I'm sure I did, and should, also have access to the South West portion of the map.

I've tried "Reinstall Map" from within Garmin Express, this doesn't seem to help. I also just updated to 2019.20 from within Express, but again, only half the map is available to choose from.

Any ideas please?

  • You can try doing a factory reset on the 66i to restore the maps, see: How to Reset the GPSMAP Handheld Devices. However, if the maps are still missing, contacting Product Support for direct assistance would likely be the next best step.

  • Tried...doesn't work unfortunately. I've found a tip elsewhere to try Garmin Express in windows rather than Mac.

I'll try that, if it works I'll post a bug report in the Garmin Express Mac forum.

  • Did you verify that the map really does not display? I don't have any experience with the European TopoActive maps. However, I have noticed that Express and the device do not necessarily show the same thing when the map has more than one "part". You might try panning over to a location which you know is in the southwest portion. Zoom in and out to see if you can see the TopoActive map. (Be sure that the part you CAN see in map setup is enabled before testing.) If you can, you have an essentially cosmetic problem. Still a problem, but not one that would prevent you from using the map...

  • Hi All.

For those experiencing this...the solution is to use Garmin Express on Windows. The Mac version seems to have a bug that is not installing the whole maps. Adding my device to Express on windows, and clicking "Reinstall Map" (exactly as you would on Mac) solved the problem completely....I now have both halves of my Topo Europe map (North East and South West) available on both my 66i and my Fenix 5+

Further info, it turns out my Express installation has not been updating (the auto-update feature fails to download properly) and from release notes it looks like this may have been solved in v. 6.19.1.0...so make sure Mac users are up to date,

  • I now have the same or simliar problem with latest garmin express  on windows 10 (July 2024). After map update (which took more than 24 hours) , all topo europe map detail was lost. Satellite image still worked fine. Garmin express app says 'there was an error installing the uipdate' so i cannot even try to install the maps. I tried the  full reset using the setup menu / reset button /reset all settings option. i even re-enabled inreach sub (as a hail mary style option). Garmin express fails. I dont think folks should try to update maps if they are happy with the maps on the device already! It seems fraught with problems. i have to contact support now as the update of a map was rendered the device useless.

Also, one more thing to add.....

    out of desperation...........

    1.i reformatted the sd card

    2. uninstalled garmin express, rebooted win 10 pc, re installed garmin express.

    3. setup the device from scratch again in garmin express.... still failing

I havent had update fails on this pc previously, and i am logged in to connect.garmin.com..so i dont beleive its  because i am not in UK/Ireland. I am in poland though, and there is an odd advanced garmin express settings..for garmin authentication domain. I  have tried this both with default seettings, and then changing it to the country where i bought the device. no difference in behaviour.

  • one more addition to the above. I installed the latest garmin express software on a completely different win 10  PC with .NET2/.NET 3.5 frameworks  and still same error. This different Pc never had any garmin software on it previously.

The garmin express app recognises the device, wants to update it with one map update, and then fails with: "there was an error installing the update"
This leads me to believe that there is a problem with the device itself. i am using the original usb garmin cable. I rang Garmin about this, tried everthing they recommended , no fix so far. Awaiting further instructions from them. I think im going to have to send this device back in to get fixed.
  • IIRC, there can be problems with temporary space during a map update. Both of the included maps are HUGE. On at least one of my devices (not sure it was the 66i, but the space problem is common to several of the devices), I got around this by moving one of the maps to the SD card. Then updating the two maps. I seem to recall that the method for moving the map to the card is not exactly easy to find.

I doubt that this is in any way related to a newer version of Express.
