Wondering about the necessity of having my phone during a round

I just got the Approach S70, Z30 and CT10 sensors.  The S70 and Z30 are paired, as are the CT10 sensors.  When I play a round, do I still need to have my phone nearby?

  • No you don't. Data is uploaded after the round.

  • Great, thanks!  But wait: doesn’t it need to be near my phone to get wind information?

  • A Bluetooth connection between the Approach S70, smartphone, and the Garmin Golf app running in the background is only needed if you would like the following features while golfing:

    • Smart notification relay from phone to the watch.
    • Weather, Wind Speed, and Wind Direction during the round.
    • Green Contour features (if Garmin Golf Membership subscription is active).

All other golf features on the watch work through the sensors and preloaded mapping installed on the watch.

  • When using the S70 paired with an iPhone, is it sufficient to open the Garmin Golf app at the start of the round, lock the phone, and not use it for the rest of the round? Or does the phone need to be unlocked occasionally to maintain the connection and ensure weather data continues to transfer between the iPhone and the S70?

  • During the round, the S70 must maintain a Bluetooth connection to your iPhone, staying in Bluetooth signal range which is about 10-15ft on average to maintain the connection outdoors.

The Garmin Golf app needs to be running the background on your iPhone to sync and transfer weather info so the Wind Speed/Direction feature updates throughout the duration on your golf round, as the forecast changes.

If you leave your phone in the golf cart and step away out of range, your watch should reconnect to your iPhone once back in range. If the Garmin Golf app is running in the background, your watch will re-sync back to the Golf app to allow connected features to resume functioning.

Your iPhone does not need to be unlocked during the round, as long as you leave the Garmin Golf app open when you lock your phone screen to put in pocket, or in cart during the round.

At the beginning of the round when at the golf course, I recommend opening the Garmin Golf app on your iPhone > Tap the Profile tab at the bottom of the opening screen > Select "My Devices" > Then confirm that your Approach S70 is showing "Connected" > Then tap the circular arrow sync icon next to your device name to perform a quick manual sync to ensure the watch is set for your round > Then when you exit out of the Garmin Golf app, avoid minimizing the app card and swiping up, as this will Force Quit the Garmin Golf app from running.
