Purchase S70 or wait?

I am in the market for a golf watch and I believe Garmin are the leaders when it comes to GPS watches. I was thinking of buying an S70 as I’m assuming it’s the top of the range within the Garmin lineup but I noticed this watch came out back in May 2023 which means it’s already nearly 1.5 years old. Am I better off waiting until next year in case an S72 comes out or is it very unlikely an upgrade to this watch will come out anytime soon.

  • The S62 was out for a long time before the S70 came out. The Garmin watches are fantastic for GPS and as a smart watch.  If you're looking for meaningful stats to really analyze your game, I'd look elsewhere.  The golf app for tracking stats is awful compared to competitors.

  • Thanks for taking the time out to respond. I’m not someone who’s massively hooked on stats so I would only really want a watch that can give me yardages to hazards and green whilst also allowing me to see the layout of the hole.

  • If that's all you want then the S70 won't dissapoint.

  • One year ago I had the same thinking, because the battery of my 5 year old S60 did not hold for 18 holes. So I looked for the S70 (EUR 750 at that time) and compared with the Epix series and my eye fell on the Epix Pro (EUR 1150 at that time).

For me it was a 'now or never" and I bought the Epix Pro 51mm

One of the big advantages is the AMOLED screen and the long battery life. I play every day a round of 9 holes = 2h GPS usage. The battery life is 11 - 13 days, so I have to load it only once a week. I like also Garmin Pay and the flash light together with all the health metrics.

If I play Golf I only use tournament modus, due to the big screen it is easy to move the marker to borders and hazards. The other Golf functions are for me more gimmicks, I play Golf and not watch! I'm happy to made the decision for the Epix Pro, I love this watch ...

  • This is a good point

Currently there are a few AMOLED touchscreen watches available from Garmin that will offer all of the same golf features available on the S70...it is worth comparing the additional features for the price-point on other Garmin outdoor wearable watches that may offer a better fit interest and features-wise, that include options not available S70.

A good starting point for AMOLED display devices in Garmin's current lineup (that offer every golf feature on S70) would be the comparison link below, which will show the spec sheets side-by-side for the S70, epix Gen 2, and fenix 8 AMOLED:

Other devices that offer AMOLED touchscreen, and all of the golf features on the S70 (47mm) include:
