S70 Not Detecting Shots

I can see this is a fairly common issue. I have had my S70 for 2+ months and it has been a very frustrating issue for a $700 watch. Today 8 drives (driver & 3 wood) did not record. And my swing speed is NOT slow. Tried practice swings first, after, hoping it detected movement but NOTHING. Once off the tee it reacts fairly well until around the green, but after reading other forum member's comments I'll try using the Measure Shot feature. Also just downloaded the latest update and see how that goes, but if the watch needs to detect the striking of the ball I'm not too optimistic.

Any other suggestions are GREATLY appreciated.

  • Well it's been a month trying various methods with the S70 to see what makes it "tick" . I've found that wearing the band tight and as high up the wrist to the glove seems to be an improvement. Still have 1-3 tee shots not registering and need to "pound" the club head into the turf for it to pickup the swing. And thanks Nate, maybe it is a smooth swing off a tee vs off the turf that makes the difference. Thanks all for your input, you too Cody.  Wink

BTW, I like the update when finishing a hole assuming that I parred the hole. Now if it could assume that I birdied , hmmm.

  • I purchased this watch about a month ago, spending around €700. We're talking about a high-end device here, so I expected significantly better performance compared to the Approach S20, which I’ve used for years without a single issue. My goal was to upgrade after many years with a reliable (though now outdated) device.

To my great surprise and frustration, I found that while the S70 does offer several additional features—such as PlayLike Distance, PinPointer, and manual targeting on the course—these are not essential. The core feature, AutoShot, simply does not work.

I had to endure a couple of rounds on the course fighting with the device, manually recording every shot like I used to do 15 years ago with the Garmin Approach S6! This is absolutely unacceptable for a product marketed as high-end and priced at €700. Equally unacceptable is the lack of meaningful support from the Customer Service team, who merely suggested a factory reset (which, of course, didn’t solve anything).

Additionally, the Tempo Training mode is incredibly unintuitive. Why ask users to set a swing speed and hope the device recognizes it? I’ve never been able to use this feature because the device fails to detect my swing at all. I expected the device to adapt to my swing and provide feedback accordingly—like any decent training tool should.

I am extremely dissatisfied and will proceed with a return ASAP.

  • Same issue on my device bought less then a month ago. Really frustrating

  • We do not have any known issues where Autoshot would be a total failure on the S70.

If your watch is not picking up any shots, there is a setting needing corrected, watch fit issue, incorrect wrist the watch is being worn, or some other use based on reason as to why you are not seeing shots recorded.

Please refer to the extensive information outlined on our article for Autoshot through the link here: My Garmin Golf Watch Is Not Detecting Shots Automatically

There are several factors with the S70 that do not specifically apply to the S20.

    • You will need to check is the "Wrist" setting in the user profile menu on your S70 and make sure you have the wrist set to "Left" if you are using right-handed clubs...or ensure the "Wrist" Setting is set to "Right" if you are using left-handed clubs.
    • The S70 must be worn on your lead wrist per the handedness orientation of the golf clubs you are using in the bullet point above.
    • If you are golfing right-handed with the watch on your right wrist, the S70 will not detect shots properly due to the impact of the club face hitting the ball not being picked up as much as it does with the lead hand. Same goes for wearing the watch on your left wrist and using left handed clubs.
    • The S70 needs to be worn on the top side of your wrist, spaced away from your golf glove. Ensure the watch is not being worn on the underside of the wrist, and at a irregular angle.
    • Ensure the fit of the band is snug enough to where there is no watch movement when your arm moves that the watch is attached to. You also should not have it tightened to the point where the band is leaving deep marks on your wrist, or to where you skin appears constricted deeply from the band.
    • If you are using a 3rd party band, the band not may be directly compatible per the design as intended from Garmin, which can lead to issues with the watch not detecting shots properly.
    • When using the Tempo Training app on the watch, please note that the wrist setting and not wearing the watch on your lead wrist will also lead to issues with detecting shots during a Tempo Training session.
    • Tempo Training also requires your club to make contact with a golf ball when swinging during the session in order to register shots, so please also ensure you hitting a ball during swings.
    • The Approach S20 is a much more basic golf watch, with only an accelerometer sensor for detecting shots, and can still miss shots during a golf round under the circumstances on our article I linked above.
    • The Approach S70 requires user input for the wrist to know more precisely that you are taking a shot with your movement, and the angle/direction of the backswing to register full swing shots during the round.
