GIR stats don't make sense

My Garmin stats tell me that I hit 43% of greens in regulation. Which is uncanny because they do say an 8 handicapper should do that. I am and apparently I do.

Anyhoo, my Garmin stats also tell me that I leave my approaches short 31% of the time, long 8%, right 20% and left 10%.

31 + 8 + 20 + 10 = 69%.

100 - 69 = 31%.

So why is my average GIR 43% when I'm only hitting greens 31% of the time?

And on another note, for those of you who, like me, have used a 1 iron in your stats for a recovery and 2 iron for a mishit for entering the club, I suggest don't bother. Garmin is telling me my 2 iron is coming up short lately and that maybe I should club up to my recovery 1 iron next time. I'm going to delete those clubs from my Garmin bag.

  • Stats are terrible on what’s meant to be a premium gps golf device. Have said this before on here and provided lots of info on the changes Garmin need to make.

  • Don't hold your breath, Steve. The good people at Garmin do nothing about it. My biggest regret was selling my far cheaper and more powerful ShotScope V2 and buying the Garmin S62.

On course it is very good, but the stats are horrific. As an example, I rank 89% in "Drive" but am 21% in "Drive distance". I average 265m (290 yards) with the driver with a longest drive of 309m. I refuse to believe that 79% of 8 to 9 handicappers average more than 265m off the tee. Especially when ShotScope tells us < 9 handicappers average 243 yards. And I only hit 35% of fairways with the driver when the average for an 8 handicapper is 52%. So I can't rank 89% in "Drive".

Garmin's stats are just rubbish. Good for working out your average club distances, the auto-caddie is great, and distances to pins are good. But forget the rest.

  • 100 agree Steve. I’ve just found my post on the stats and even put screen shots in on how the stats were displayed, so much better, this was Golfshot GPS. Also to friends use Shotscope v2 and like you say stats are much clearer on their app. I nearly sold my S62 and tags to get the V2, could of got 2 of them for the price! I do like the S62 out on the course, but let down by everything else. If Shotscope bring a V3 with a bright colour screen and hole view it will be a game changer for them….

  • Steve I’m getting a little confused, It’s the V3 that friends have not the V2, I’m thinking the V4 if they do one will destroy the S62. But agree, might get one and see how I get in with it. I’m currently on my way to single figures and good stat feedback will be very useful in getting there, S62 just not giving me what I need Slight frown

  • It just takes a soft swing for the approach shot so that the AutoShot wont detect it and suddenly you can walk up to the green with a 350m drive. If I want to delete these incorrect strokes the Garming Golf app wont allow it, some kind of error. So i have to log in to the webpage when I get back home. I doubt every user actually does this so maybe that is why we see inflated lenghts for drives?

  • I am really not sure what sparked this thread to be bumped 5 months after it was posted. It is a pretty stupid question and was better off in the abyss... but since it's returned, I'll answer for anybody else reading while the Steve's pat each-other's backs in embarrassing ignorance.

You can have an "Approach" shot on a Par 5, miss it, and still hit the green in regulation. This will happen literally any time you are within 250 yards on your second shot and leave it within 50 yards of the green. Any shot within 50 yards in a "Chip", not an "Approach". If you hit the green with your 3rd, congratulations you got the GIR and missed the Approach... causing the percentages to be different.

  • Nah mine aren't inflated. I check over the shots each time and only use the auto detect on my 54, 58 and putter.

  • It’s not just the approach shot, it’s also things like shots round the green where you may use your 8i and this shot goes into your stat average. Only option I’ve been given is to set up another club and select this when you have done that shot, doesn’t work when you using the CT10 tags. And in general other golf apps display stats much better. I do still think the watch and the tags work very well in the way they never miss a shot and walking off the green I don’t have to do much.
