Notifications have become intermittent. Is my watch defective?

Notifications have stopped working on my watch. I didn't realize until after I got an S60 how much I appreciate this feature! I have gone through the manual, powered off and restarted both my phone and watch several times, uninstalled and reinstalled the Garmin Connect app, nothing seems to be a complete fix. When I reinstall the app notifications may work for a short period. And occasionally they'll work but for the most part this function is no longer operable. Looking for anyone with similar experiences especially if there's a fix available. Have researched as best I can to no avail. Second question, something I really don't want to do if at all possible but what would be the worst case if I reset the watch entirely?

  • I've had the S62 since late August and smart notifications worked fine. I suspect they started becoming intermittent around Nov 18th when there was a garmin golf app update, after that only switching Bluetooth off and on on my phone (galaxy s8) would rectify it, but the notifications would stop again, sooner rather than later. On the 30th December I decided to uninstall the golf app and I've received all notifications for 5 days running now, so this obviously points to the golf app for me. I've still got garmin connect and connect IQ installed.

I'm playing golf tomorrow so will reinstall the golf app and see what happens....

  • So after 5 days of no issues I reinstalled the garmin golf app on day 6. Enabled smart notifications in the app and switched phone off to play golf. On switching the phone on after my round, my phone received a ton of notifications, but nothing appeared on the watch at all. I disabled/enabled BT on my phone and the notifications appeared (as a notification icon, i.e. no sound or vibration alert). About an hour later I received a WhatsApp message on my phone and no notification was received on the watch. Make of this what you will, but it points to the golf app being the issue to me.

  • For everyone in this thread and for all other Approach S62 owners that see this thread, if you would like me to add you to the report for this issue, it will result in an email from our Outdoor Helpdesk team once the issue has been resolved by our golf engineers.

Please highlight my name and send me a Private Message and reference Approach S62 smart notification issue. I will reach back out to you and will be happy to get you added. Thank you!

  • I'm Android and notifications worked for a few weeks then stopped and the short answer/workaround is to Force Stop the Garmin Golf app from Settings / Apps / Garmin Golf. It restarts immediately on its own and boom, the most recent notifications fly to the phone.

My sense is if the watch is stuck for too long searching for satellites or something then the garmin service on the phone gets jammed or thinks the watch is gone. I used to have to uninstall / re-install the garmin golf app to get notifications to work again, but the Force Stop takes all of 3 seconds. A beautiful clean fix after you curse a few times for missing a notification.

To help verify all this, I downloaded an app call Push Notifications which sends a single notification. Great for debugging versus waiting for the next text.

Another detail is that after you install the app, you have to go to Settings / Apps / Garmin Golf and give it permission to the phone, contacts, etc. Otherwise you'll get all of the other notifications excepts phone calls.

And for completeness, I don't really need the garmin Connect app, except that my watch face has the weather and you need that companion app for the weather. However, the permissions for the Connect app don't matter - the watch only pays attention to the Garmin Golf app.

  • This worked for me yesterday. My watch has been intermittent as discussed. I read this post and at the time, wasn't receiving notifications. I tried the force stop, then my emails, texts etc. began syncing between phone and watch. I had an S60 before upgrading last summer, and don't recall ever having this issue on that watch. Figure the S62 is still somewhat recent, so maybe all the wrinkles will be worked out. I do like the S62 very much. Thanks for this tip!

    • Has there been any update I am having the same problem I have uninstalled golf app and notifications are working at the moment.  Thanks
  • The smart notifications issue is going to be resolved pending release of a new version of the Android Golf APP. I am sorry there is not an exact date that can be given but it should be very soon based on what I am able to see on our end.

  • The Garmin Golf app updated to version 1.29.5 yesterday. Problem still here. If I uninstall the golf app in the meantime in anticipation of a fix, can you tell me if any stats recorded while uninstalled will be available when I reinstall?

  • All stats and scorecards are backed up in the cloud, which is your www.garminconnect.com account on the web. You can buy a new phone, change devices, etc and as long as you use the same email consistently with Garmin Connect, you will not lose your scorecards and metrics.
