I seemed to have solved the problem by resetting my watch and deleting it from my connect app. I had to install it back into connect and restart the watch.
everything seems be back to normal
The app update did not fix the problems. To be fair customer service told me they would inform me when they had a fix and they haven't contacted me yet. I just happened to notice a new update yesterday. I any case, I will follow the advice and do a factory reset and see if that fixes the problem for me too.
I have the same problem with approach S40 in 2020
