Crazy putting speed?

Just bought GSPro today and connected it to my R50. Played Lofoten Links. Everything works good, but not the putting. Stimp was set to 10 and when I hit a 30 cm putt on a flat green it goes almost 4-5 meters..? Several times the same result. When I set the stimp to 6 it became a little better, but this is not good enough. Garmin have to solve this.

  • I practiced putting on some Augusta greens. Hard to find a flat putt but eventually did. I wanted to hit some short downhill putts too. Used 10 stimp .

    mph      Feet

    2.2.       4.5

    3.1.       5.7

    4.1.       9.6

    5.9        18.9

    6.7         22.2

one mis read. 3.6” putt showed 5.9 mph which didn’t reach the end of the mat and is about 3.6”.

I made almost every 5’ downhill putt but the R50 didn’t pick up every short putt which could be a mat issue.

I’m satisfied with the putting. It’s a learning curve on a simulator. You are still making a stroke so it should help when you hit the outdoors.

Joe Lagowski did a YouTube video and tested putting on GSPro with Uneekor eye mini. He used a basic stimp meter to measure his mat I think his mat is a 9.5 stimp. I think the R50 would be very close to the eye mini.

i had a hard time connecting to GSPro tonight and once I started making some swings I  had a lot of misreads. Haven’t experienced the amount of missed shots before tonight. Glad it was just practice. Hit a bunch of balls on hole 16 with Sunday pin. Fun to putt on that hole and hit shots into. I’m not 100% yet but working on it. I’m 61 now so i don’t heal as fast anymore. Had rotator cuff surgery a year ago and still trying to get back the speed and strength I had.

  • Really hope you get back to 100% and get your full swing going! I am 53, had a frozen shoulder two years ago. People told me that it would take 2-3 years to heal and I was worried about the golfing. I could barely lift my left arm. I contacted my massage theraphist. She is strong like a bull and also use needles. After 5 hurtful treatments in 5 weeks I was good to go.

Did some more testing today before lunch. Green 2 at Stiklestad, big green and quite easy to find a flat spot. Downloaded the stimp chart and compared my 1-3 meter putts both on stimp 13 and 10. The numbers are spot on, same with my HLA (-0.4/ -0.5).
I putted on the first 90 cm on my mat as it is (which as mentioned before has a lot of friction), while on the last 1,8 meters of the mat and on to the low edge of the screen I layed the thin PVC tarpaulin. Very easy to handle and I am sure you can find something similar in a fabric store where you live.
Physical distance from the ball to the screen (2,7 meters) is still spot on, and I find it  very satisying to have this feedback from the real world with regards to these types of putts.

I follow Joe Lagowski. Will soon check out his latest videos. A few weeks ago he hinted about testing the R50. Look forward to that.
I also hope to play some simgolf tournaments in the future, but right now I am fully occupied with testing, planning, building etc. I am also the organizer for the kids golf (6-12 year olds) in my home town. The general interest for golf in Norway has exploded the last 5 years, and especially the kids and youth are really hooked up. Love it :-)

  • Joe just posted the first of his Garmin R50 video series. In this ‘first impressions’ video, he is impressed with the data accuracy for long shots (even chips), but clearly highlighting (like his mate Ben TripleBogey) putting needs work. He will post a detailed putting video soon.

  • A lot of different ways of testing putting accuracy on this post. The only true test would be to go on a flat green with a known stimp and measure the put with Garmin R50. Anyone using GSPRO, different mats, courses, HTH are just comparing apple and oranges.

  • Yes, I thought about that too and would really love if somebody could do this. Where I am it is half a meter of snow on the greens :-)

  • I was just checking speed compared to distance and it works fine on GSPro but not perfect. It’s like picking up a different putter and getting used to the speed with a different putter. You could add or take away weight on a putter and it will change your stroke to match speed and distance. 4.1 mph goes 10’ which is correct on GSPro and it’s not to difficult to hit this speed consistently with the R50. Right now I have nothing to compare to the R50 but I know when I hit a putt 4.1 mph on a flat green I get 10’ of distance. For me it’s a starting point for my stroke in sim play. When I go play outside adjustment will have to be made.

I really hope Garmin can make putting even better.

  • Thank you! I’m always swinging a club so I’m probably pushing my body too much!

I’m feeling better and was swinging 5 hybrid without too much issue but not 100% yet.

Had a lot of mis reads tonight which is not normal. It’s the second time it’s happened. Only on R50 range so not a huge deal. Might have to check lighting or something.

You are a good man working with those kids and trying to grow this great game!

  • Just watched Joe Lagowski’s in-depth Chipping and putting reviews on the R50. He’s a very knowledgeable and skilled golfer and LM tester so would recommend (also Garmin Support) to spend some time watching.

    1. Chipping test: very good and consistent results, unit picking up shots at low and higher speeds, bump and runs, chipping and pitching pretty much bang on. Only one note of concern was on the horizontal launch angle at low speed chips, a prelude to what would be the key topic in the putting test.

    2. Putting: as he already mentioned in his ‘first impressions’ video, in which he was overall impressed by the units out-of-the-gate performance, there seems to be a problem properly aligning the unit (with the 2 ball alignment, using a laser etc. , even when the unit registers a 0 degree alignment, a couple of seconds later the angle varies.
in the putting test, the horizontal launch angle was the key problem. The slower the putting speed, the bigger the deviation (to the angles to the left). Even changing the alignment of the unit multiple times to improve alignment, no better results.
He also mentioned that playing a stimp 8 in GSPro plays like a stimp 12 on HTH,. As GSPro is taking the raw data from the R50, Joe (and also TripleBogey) mention they assume Garmin has been slowing down the greens on HTH to cater for the putting issues.
In short: he mentioned the putting test was the worst compared to other recent units tested like the Square, Porter and Nova LM’s. so probably a reason why there is no putting practice in HTH yet Wink

    1. Not to be negative here, as the unit has been barely launched and shows already a lot of potential, but it’s clear that Garmin needs to focus on continuously improving the software, especially wrt putting accuracy. For a unit of this price, we should expect nothing more than accuracy.
  • Thanks for your post, TomCatDV, appreciate it.

Yes, I have been watching all videos from Joe lately, and the most from TripleBogey. I follow these two guys closely, they seem to know their stuff wrt simgolf.
I am new to GSPro and the R50. Been only using it for about 3 weeks, but I have used it a lot, and I understand both Joes and Bens frustrations with the putting.
For me personally I really enjoy 97% of all aspects with the combination of the R50 and GSPro. I did not buy this unit to play HTH. I bought it after watching reliable persons testing it, filtered out the bias here and there and found that this is exactly what suits me and my small communitys needs.

It has not let me or us down. Drives, irons, chips, the graphics and courses from GSPro - love it, absolutely love it! The screen and ease of use - brilliant! The slow motion camera - brilliant! My numbers are spot on, the same with all other (good) golfers here in my home town who have tested it. I have tested it against TM - The R50 gives more accuracy. The easy portability - great! And the bonus of having over 40.000 courses for the kids and others who would like to play their home courses. And it does not demand so much space as other LMs.

Putting - especially the short ones - is an issue, I agree. Strange that most of them go to the left - and very much left without putting assistance. And I totally agree with Joe that the stimp should be set to about 8 to do some decent putting. There is something here that I think Garmin should adress, just like I stated in my original post, but Garmin told me that this was a GSPro thing..
Anyway - I have learned to live with this and found ways to compensate on the short putts. Me, my friends, and the kids group I organize really enjoy the whole package - and overall it beats TM, no doubt from our perspective. Playing golf in Jurassic Park or in Mordor, or my favorite courses in Norway - Lofoten (Norwegian Links) or Stiklestad. Great appeal for everyone of us.

Standby modus is another issue. This happens every now and then, and is a little frustrating when you have to start everything all over again, loose your data and the time it takes to restart.

That said, I am happy with this investment, it gives me a lot of joy during the winter season here in the north. I know it is early days, and like you and many others, lets hope that Garmin picks up some of the points of improvement given from Joe and Ben and other heavy weighters out there.

  • Super accurate unit for me on all shots and I can deal with the putting. Ball isn’t screaming across the green or going 2’ on long putts like it did in the beginning.

practing putting on Sanctuary Moon hole 1 and 2 is good because you can find a very flat putt. I can’t make a 20’ putt on GSPro practice green to save my life but I can on the course. Something is different on the course. It’s not perfect but it’s better!
