Many enclosure impact screens are in a 4:3 or more square aspect ratio. It would be nice to be able to configure the aspect ratio of the external display.

For those wanting more options to customize the display picture directly on the Approach R50, I will submit feedback tickets through your accounts for Garmin to review for potential future updates to the R50.
At this time, the aspect ratio is set on the display that the R50 is HDMI connected to. The unit is sending a full image where the dimensions are then displayed per the settings and picture options available on the display you are using to connect the other end of the HDMI cable to.
For example, my R50 is connected to a display monitor that offers Full/Wide, or Original options for the Aspect Ratio Settings.

Subscribe to this request too. Think the BenQ AH700ST projector would be a good option as it auto-adjusts the output to the screen dimensions. BTW: thanks Cody for the helpful monitor comments.

My projector is an Optoma GT2000HDR and seems to detect the aspect ratio based on the input, no manual override.
The manual for that projector model indicates that you can configure aspect ratio by accessing the settings menu either via the remote or the built in button controls on the projector to access the Menu > Settings > Display >Then from this menu, "Screen Type" is not relevant, due to display port via HDMI on R50 not configurable...however "Aspect Ratio" is configurable on the projector where you can set the Optoma to "Auto" or "Native".
I referenced the manual for the model you mentioned through the link here.
I recommend contacting support for the manufacturer of that projector if you are not sure what display setting is best for what you are wanting visually on screen for their suggestions towards a best experience with that model.
I was able to get a 4:3 aspect ratio configured. I did have to configure "Screen Type" to 4:3 in order for an "Aspect Ratio" of 4:3 to be enabled. Once both screen type and aspect ratio were configured, the image was scaled to 4:3. Thanks!
