Garmin Approach R50: No descent angle ?

Just wondering why Garmin does not provide descent angle metrics for the R50. This is a common metric which even cheaper LM’s provide

  • Thank you for the reply on the subject.

I see no reason why this can't be added as a metric that can be displayed. The reason why is Descent Angle is not a measured metric, but a calculated one based on ball speed, launch angle, and spin. The unit is already calculating the descent angle when it estimates carry distance and total distance (the difference between the two is rollout is is entirely based on descent angle, backspin, and green/fairway hardness/softness).

So the R50 already has all the ability to measure and calculate descent angle, it is just a matter of displaying it for the user to see. IMO it is a very simple ask that will help those of us who want to see it and those who need it for club fitting.

  • Wrong. These competing cheaper launch monitors have landing angle.

    * Rapsody MLM2PRO $700
    Flightscope Mevo+ $2000.
    * Foresights GC3S $3800 (you might need a software upgrade or subscription or something to get it landing angle)

Plus any launch monitor that works with awesome-golf so down to the R10 for $600.

Anyway I am not cost sensitive, I will pay whatever a good launch monitor with landing angel costs. The R50 already measures and
collects all the data needed to calculate landing angle. It would just be a software update. Please listen to your customers.

  • I guess a standin for decent angle is roll out; where, with irons, less rollout is better.

What I mean is, if I compare two 7-irons, both average carry distance 150.

    7-iron-A: average total distance 160
    7-iron-A: average total distance 166

Then we assume 7-iron-A has the steeper decent angle since it has less rollout.

Garmin don't give us rollout but it is relatively easy to calculate as Total distance - Carry distance

  • Garmin is aware of this post requesting the metric, and any Approach R50 users wanting this metric added can post here, or users may contact Garmin Support to request their account to be added to the feature request ticket on our end. If any info on this request becomes available, users will receive communications at that time. In the meantime, there is not any additional communication to provide further

While experience requests for new features are considered for possible future updates/enhancements, it is not guaranteed that the request will result in becoming available.

As the Approach R50 is compatible with multiple 3rd party simulation platforms, and if the features specific to one of the compatible 3rd party platforms is offering features that are not unavailable through our Home Tee Hero, or in Practice Mode...the best option for you is to consider using Awesome Golf, e6 Connect/Apex, or GSPro to use the R50 with their services.

The Home Tee Hero golf simulator software offered from Garmin offers specific features with the Garmin Golf Membership subscription, which is offered at a great price-point and value...USD: $9.99/month or $99.99/year for the current features offered, and the massive amount of worldwide course maps offered. Awesome Golf is compatible with the Approach R50, and subscription services per the prices Awesome Golf is offering the metric you are wanting, among other features.

  • Awesome golf only works when the R50 is connected t a windows PC. It does not work at outdoor driving ranges where I use the R50. Even with Awsome golf on my phone and my phone bluetothed to the R50, awesome golf is not an option.

  • Correct, this is true for all of the 3rd party connectors available on the Approach R50. If anything becomes available we will let you know.
