R50 + GSPro -> Frequent Disconnects

(I'm starting a new thread for this issue. There's some discussion of it in a putting thread but it deserves it's own thread.)

A number of us are having issues while using the connector for the R50 and GSPro. We'll start a round and it will drop the connection after a variable number of shots. It can be reconnected by restarting the GSPro connection on the R50 but this takes a while and it may just drop the connection again.

I've played many rounds like this and invariably the R50 drops the connection at least a couple of times during the round.

Nobody has diagnosed what could be causing the issue.

It would be great if we could hard-wire the R50 to the computer for the GSPro connection.

Hopefully Garmin will be able to fix this in a future update. Right now, this seriously hampers the playing experience.

  • Update as of December 17th, 2024:

There are two connection methods outlined on the GSPro site for the R50 setup for the WiFi connection with the "Hot Spot through the R50" and "WiFi home network" methods.

I recommend checking to see which one of the recommended methods GSPro suggests works best for your setup in relation to the method you are currently using, to see iif the reliability of the connection during sessions is working better during sessions. .

Garmin does not specifically support the setup FAQ outlined from GSPro, so any questions in relation to the content outlined on the R50 setup page for GSPro should be relayed to their support team for any further information on the recommendations.

As users continue to test the connection method outlined above, see if that corrects the issue as there have been reports of success following the hotspot connection method for GSPro setup between the R50.

  • I might be getting ahead of myself here and need to play a few more rounds to confirm it’s fully resolved, but so far, the solution for me seems to be disabling Wi-Fi on the Garmin (via settings) and then connecting to GSPro through hotspot mode.

My hunch is that when the Garmin was also connected to my Wi-Fi (the same network my computer is hardwired to), some sort of conflict or confusion occurred in how GSPro was trying to communicate with the Garmin. Either that, or the Garmin's Wi-Fi card is struggling to handle both hotspot mode and maintaining a regular Wi-Fi connection at the same time.

I'll keep testing and report back if anything changes.

  • That seemed to work for me.   I have other problems though. I was trying to run GS Pro using Parallels Desktop on my MacBook Pro.  It runs and works but is very unstable so I am going to start using a PC Laptop. The lack of stability is unrelated to the R50.  The more I use my R50 the more I like it.  Would like to see continued upgrades to Home Tee Hero such as not having to be so quick about choosing a mulligan.

  • It’s been really solid for me now. No disconnects and no missed shots for a few days.

Hopefully more updates to come. Being able to add more time for mulligans would be good.

Courses total distance from each tee box would be good! I don’t play the tips anymore at 61 so it’s good to know what I’m getting into.

  • Thanks. Just got mine today and after about 10 minutes of disconnect frustration I came here I got the solution.

  • Still super slow putting on HTH. It’s not even close to being accurate. It feels like it’s half speed or 7 stimp maybe. No matter if I change the speed setting.

i was also having more disconnects or just the R50 freezing. Disconnected from wifi and turned the unit off and back on. Never disconnected again.

I may disconnect wifi each time and restart before playing and see how this works.

  • I am on the latest software and I still am getting occasional disconnects (i play daily and I have had 4 disconnects out of the last 7 days at varying times during the session).  When I lose connection I have to completely restart GSPro and lose all my round data.  Awesome Golf  disconnects happen very frequently (our family played for 2 hours yesterday and I counted 15 disconnects) but still least after I got the unit to reconnect it picked up where we left off.  It was just frustrating having to go through the process of re-connecting to Awesome Golf.  In both cases (GSPro and AG) i am connected via R50 hotspot which has been the recommended method.

  • A few things to try and check.

    1. Make sure your computer is not automatically connecting to your router.

    2. Reset your router or clear cache

    3. what has worked for me is to disconnect wifi from R50 and then re-connect before starting a round etc… I have done this a few times and didn’t get a disconnect.

    4. Check your router speed. I’m over 100 up and down next to the R50.

It is frustrating if you are in the middle of a round and the R50 freezes and will not re-connect to GSPro once you reset and try to connect.

  • I started off using an iPad with Awesome Golf and was getting a lot of disconnects.  I then tried running GS Pro using Parallels Windows emulator on my MacBook Pro.  That whole setup was unstable.  I then bought a new Alienware PC and run GS Pro on that and it has been very stable with no disconnects. The only issue I have now is that sometimes the ball sensor on the R50 will stop working-the red light is off so I have to restart the R50 to get it working again. Maybe an issue with the R50 interfacing with GS Pro?  The good thing is that after restarting the R50, GS Pro reconnects with the R50 so I do not lose anything.

  • Really appreciate the quick feedback.  I’ll look into each of these.  I played GSPro for over an hour today with no disconnects…so that was cool Blush
