R50 + GSPro -> Frequent Disconnects

(I'm starting a new thread for this issue. There's some discussion of it in a putting thread but it deserves it's own thread.)

A number of us are having issues while using the connector for the R50 and GSPro. We'll start a round and it will drop the connection after a variable number of shots. It can be reconnected by restarting the GSPro connection on the R50 but this takes a while and it may just drop the connection again.

I've played many rounds like this and invariably the R50 drops the connection at least a couple of times during the round.

Nobody has diagnosed what could be causing the issue.

It would be great if we could hard-wire the R50 to the computer for the GSPro connection.

Hopefully Garmin will be able to fix this in a future update. Right now, this seriously hampers the playing experience.

  • Is the computer also on the home network connecting automatically?

what does the R50 show for signal strength when it’s connected to the computer? Does it drop off from good to fair?

  • the home network is connected via a physical line.  I have removed all other wifi networks from the computer so it would not try to connect to anything else.  I also tried disconnecting the ethernet but no internet causes issues with launching GS Pro.  The thing I can't figure out is why there is no connection issues when GS pro is not running, which to me takes it seem like it is a GS Pro software issue and not a network issue.  Something is causing the disconnect to happen.  One thing I did notice is that the only way to get the r50 to connect automatically is to have the ethernet cable disconnected.  If it is connected, I have to manually connect to the r50 network.  the r50 shows the connection is strong, however the wireless connection on the PC is showing a single bar.  That said, I don't have much I can do to improve it since the devices are so close together already.

  • I can launch GSPro and go into practice and play around with all the settings without an internet connection. Messing around with it right now..

I can place a ball on any green in the playground.

i can change green setting and tee height in dynamic holes etc…

Try this. Turn on R50 and open GSPro app.

make sure your computer is not locking into any wifi except R50 connection. Make sure Ethernet is not connected. Launch GSPro.

  • I did a bit more testing and I really think this is a GS Pro issue.  I was able to get connected and get into a range session.  Played for about 30 mins with no disconnect.  I left the range session to play an actual round and as soon as I did that the session with r50 disconnected.  I opened up the course and then reconnected the r50.  It worked through all 9 holes and then I left the round and tried to go back into a range session.  Again, the r50 disconnected.  If the GS Pro folks are listening, please have a look at what is happening with your connect app.

  • GS Pro at least for me will not actually open without an internet connection of some kind.  It gets hung on loading.  As soon as I connect the ethernet back up, it loads right up.  I have tried multiple scenarios with the ethernet disconnected (disconnect it once GS Pro is up and running) and have run into the same issues with disconnect.  Regardless, there is no reason why the wifi connection should be so fragile that it won't work with an ethernet connection on the PC.  I get the issues with the wifi side.  We'll see if Garmin/gs pro teams are able to look into this deeper.  I am now convinced this is more about how the GS Pro app is trying to maintain the connection with the r50 that is the problem.

  • GS Pro team asked me to try the beta version. That fixed most of the disconnect issues for me. You can try it from the system page in GS Pro towards the bottom.

  • I did the new update to the R50 that was out on December 5th and I am using the Beta of GSPro............not much better.  Still disconects randomly.  I can't find any pattern at all.  I can play 5 holes perfectly and then it might disconnect.  Then Ican play 3 shots and it disconnects.  Very frustrating.  Hope they figure this out soon.

  • agreed.  The beta seemed to help but not completely resolve the disconnects.  While not as convenient, I do think a direct connect to the computer via USB C would be an awesome approach to not have to worry about the WIFI signal.  That said, there is no reason why WIFI should be having so many issues.

  • Well, I have been exchanging emails directly with the GSPRo team and they have been working closely with the Garmin team.  I sent a few reports from the R50 to Garmin as directed by GSPro.  I sent three yesterday.  Within a few hours of doing that, GSPro sent me a note saying they updated the connector in GSPro - it is now v1.8.7.  I will be trying it this afternoon........good news is that both Garmin and GSPro have this connection issue as a priority and they seems to be working on it.  Hopefully this new connector with work!

  • I was testing that version with them yesterday.  Significantly improved the disconnects.  I still had one over about a 6 hour period of testing.  They are definitely figuring it out.  Glad to see they are making it a priority to resolve.  The GS Pro support response has been impressive.
