R50 + GSPro -> Frequent Disconnects

(I'm starting a new thread for this issue. There's some discussion of it in a putting thread but it deserves it's own thread.)

A number of us are having issues while using the connector for the R50 and GSPro. We'll start a round and it will drop the connection after a variable number of shots. It can be reconnected by restarting the GSPro connection on the R50 but this takes a while and it may just drop the connection again.

I've played many rounds like this and invariably the R50 drops the connection at least a couple of times during the round.

Nobody has diagnosed what could be causing the issue.

It would be great if we could hard-wire the R50 to the computer for the GSPro connection.

Hopefully Garmin will be able to fix this in a future update. Right now, this seriously hampers the playing experience.

  • I have one data point that might provide a clue. On the computer in question, I had an external WiFi adapter in addition to the built-in one because I have been using it with Flightscope which requires two connections.

Today, I removed the second adapter and used the built-in WiFi and had zero disconnects using GSPro through the R50. I played four rounds in a row, so a lot of shots without difficulty.

  • I had the same issue of disconnecting last week.  I have a gaming laptop, and I got about 50 minutes in, and it disconnected.  I was able to reconnect but then it disconnected after about 2 minutes..............I don't have anything connected other than the laptop through the R50 GSPro connector.

  • Same issue for me and I have tried everything.  I have a gaming PC and turned off all networking except for the r50 network.  I can't get it to stay connected for more than a few mins and have not even been able to try GS Pro yet as a result.  I agree on the hardline connect.  There is already a USB C port in the back of the R50 so it seems like there would be no reason to not allow for data transfer between R50 and PC using that port.  That would completely eliminate networking related issues.  Hopefully the hardware was designed to allow this to be addressed through a software update.  Anyone gotten a response from directly from either Garmin or GSPro folks?

  • GSPro said they are working with Garmin to fix missed shots, putting issues and disconnects.

i was able to play a round without a disconnect so I’m thinking my signal strength was stronger. It did say fair connection when it was dropping and when it held it was showing good connection on the R50. The missed shots and putting issues are another story.

It’s frustrating buying a $5k LM and having issues like this. No testing? Just send it out to the public and then have them do the testing?

  • Garmin sent an update. Putting is working great and no disconnects or missed shots. If it stays this way then it’s a winner. I actually made some putts tonight. Played a few holes at Wynn golf club.

  • By sent an update, did this just appear through the normal automated process or did you get something directly from them? I tried a normal update yesterday and nothing was ready.

what version are your on now?

  • Okay, I got my update and it is amazing! I can't believe how good it is for putting now. It literally feels perfect with GS pro. Have not run tests yet for home to hero but this is literally everything I could want it to be now.

  • November 5th, 2024 the latest update for the Approach R50 version 3.5.0 for the GLM software was released to address concerns with the connection to GSPro.

Post for the update release referenceable here: https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/golf/f/approach-r50/396969/approach-r50-glm-software-3-5-0

  • Cool!

I played the same course on both GS pro and home tee hero and the difference is amazing. I hope they work on the ball physics in HTH because GS pro is just so much better, especially putting.

  • Dang - I was excited that this update would resolve my issues.  Seems like the connection was better than before but still having it disconnect frequently.  I tried connecting the computer to the r50 network without having GS Pro open and the connection will stay forever.  As soon as GS Pro starts interacting with the r50 network the disconnects come.  So it is not the wireless connection between the PC and Garmin.  It is something about how GS Pro is trying to communicate with the Garmin.
