Garmin R50 - club data and distances.

I got my R50 yesterday and my club head speed seems to be about 20 mph off with each club? Is there any way of calibrating the device or is it possible it’s picking up interference of some kind. Can’t get my 8 iron to go more than 100 yards for example. Normally a 140/45 club on track man or GC quad.

  • I don't agree with this assessment. The only way I can get the distance readings correct is to change the elevation settings. I'm at 633' above sea level and I have to change the elevation settings to 3950' above sea level to get the correct distance. I have access to other simulators and my distances are correct on those. The only issue is it will reset itself sometimes and I have to go in and change it back to 3950'. It's been this way since I got it in December and none of the updates have changed it.

  • Returning mine. Good thing I purchased from playbetter no questions asked. Took mine to range to confirm my indoor results (not indoor swing). My gap wedge is my 100yrd club all my shots were between 95 and 105 carry out side, R50 read 80-85 even though the actual shot was bouncing off the 100yrd sign in carry... Same issue with the PW 15 -20 yrds short carrying well beyond the 100 mark a couple landing on the 125 mark R50 says 90-102 yrds not 115-125.

Since Garmin doesn't seem to think there is an issue I'm out, it's gone.

I'm lefty another thread had another lefty complaining about the same thing not sure if that matters but wanted to mention it in case anyone from Garmin cares.

I really wanted this to work but it just causes aggravation and 'swing from the heels' not 'indoor swing' for me.

  • The latest update (Version 4.10) contained the following improvements related to this topic:

    • Improved the consistency of club metric measurements
    • Home Tee Hero) Improved gameplay physics.

Hopefully you installed the update and played with the new improvements.

Concerns with distance should have gone through Garmin Support as relevant information to your concern is requested and if provided...your concern is looked into in-depth from our end.

  • Well I only had 60 days to return this and I have no interest in being a beta tester for the product. If you give me one i will be glad to be a tester but for 5k i want it to work. And I did go through support just more beta testing asks...

Without the admittance of a problem I have no confidence in a resolution.

    Thanks for the reply.

  • I have had this for several months and I certainly would not call it a “beta“product. This is my second LM, last being the GC3. All of these go through FW updatedsto improve the algorithms over time and Garmin has been good with regular updates always improving the device. Foresight too, had issues and corrected with FW updates.

  • gotta be honest, that’s disappointing. i’ve compared a good number of shots directly against a GC quad, and excluding the odd misread the r50 is impressively accurate in all direct measurements—ball speed, chs, spin, path, face, aoa, etc. the calculated metrics (carry, total, deviation) are persistently low compared to the numbers on both FSX/the GC display (which tends to overstate carry for driver/low spin shots in my experience) and GS pro. there are tons of r50 owners online expressing the same findings. since the actual hardware is so accurate with the direct measurements, i’ve held out hope that garmin would be responsive and improve the software to have distance read more accurately.

i’ve pretty much shelved my r50 since i have access to a GCq, so i’m happy to get some data to compare between the different softwares and LMs.

  • If you have info showing side by side direct comparisons of metrics, contacting Garmin Golf support to provide the info will result in your concern being reviewed directly by our Quality & Engineering team.

Those posting discussions on closed groups outside of our forums site...or simply stating that their unit is inaccurate do not provide the data for us to actually look into your use case of the Approach R50.

A Golf Specialist through Garmin Support will gather all relevant data in your concern with a direct comparison between the R50 and GC Quad to actually have that info looked at.

  • that would be great cody, thanks. does q&e have specific data in mind that would be most useful? eg types of shots, indoor/outdoor, etc? i’m at sea level right now but will be at 10k ft next week so could get some altitude adjusted measurements as well. let me know what would be helpful.
