is anyone else not getting accurate distances on 4.30

i can’t get accurate distance readings with the garmin at all. i just bought it a couple days ago, i’ve tried out doors in doors all the distances from the hitting net and all the distances from the garmin to the hitting matt. i’ve set the garmin completely level, i’ve set it higher and lower all kinds of lighting nothing makes a difference. i would be ok if it was like 5 to 10 yards off but it’s like 40 to 50 yards off with my irons and for my driver and woods an can be 50 to 100+ yards off. i don’t understand. i’m about to return it but i’d figure ask around to see if anyone else is having problems so i can know if i should just hold on and wait for an update or just return it and give up on my affordable simulator dreams.

  • I cannot really judge indoor issues and ball path as my indoor sim is not ready yet for use with real balls.

On range I have rarely seen issues like this, normally the app will show what I see. But then again on range the unit measures the ball for a longer distance.

What is strange is that You do not see a big difference in adjusting altitude.

The "normal" correction factor should be around 6% for 5000 ft elevation change. I have also seen 5% for 2000 ft change, but trust this more: https://www.titleist.com/teamtitleist/b/tourblog/posts/the-effect-of-altitude-golf-ball-aerodynamics

I don't know what factor Garmin uses, but 10000 ft should be around 12% increase in distance for driver. Way less for wedges.

In short, if You hit a 250 yds driver shot at 0 ft elevation, the distance should increase to approx 280 on 10.000 ft setting.

Increase temperature, and this should also increase distance, but a 10 degree F change is only approx 2 yards.

  • In theory yes, that should work but it doesn't for me. But the AG app works perfectly so I'm not going to waste any more time fidgeting around with the Garmin app. I hope this post helps others to avoid all the frustration with the Garmin app. The R10 is a wonderful tool but only if it's working with an accurate app :-)

  • Yes, I kind of agree.

But the strange thing is that Garmin app works very well for some, and very bad for others.

And no-one can figure out why.

  • I sent mine back and had the same issues with a second one. I tried everything possible to no avail.  I give up. I wanted this for indoor use and just can not get it to give accurate distances.

  • The Garmin app parameters are not good for indoor or outdoor with a net. They have to find a solution because with Awesome golf app the same conditions produce good results. I wrote to Garmin but they didn’t reply, they have a good product badly supported by their app furthermore not free…

  • Well, that is my point.

There are many comparisments online between Awesome Golf and Garmin Golf app.

And after the possibility to adjust course height in Garmin Golf many got the correct distances.

Also the rct update in 4.3 for the R10 has helped a lot with spin readings indoor and accuracy.

I can't test this myself yet, but hope to have my sim ready during the weekend.

There I will have many of the possible issues (concrete floor/walls/roof, projector, fridge, narrow distances, You name it), so I will probably do a lot of fiddling before I hope I can make it work.

I will update my findings in due course.

As a general note returning the R10 will not work, as there is nothing wrong with the unit itself.

  • You are correct about returning. Garmin was very quick with a replacement but I still had issues. Best of luck.  I tried everything to get this working in my garage. Too many factors to list.  Hope you have better luck.
