is anyone else not getting accurate distances on 4.30

i can’t get accurate distance readings with the garmin at all. i just bought it a couple days ago, i’ve tried out doors in doors all the distances from the hitting net and all the distances from the garmin to the hitting matt. i’ve set the garmin completely level, i’ve set it higher and lower all kinds of lighting nothing makes a difference. i would be ok if it was like 5 to 10 yards off but it’s like 40 to 50 yards off with my irons and for my driver and woods an can be 50 to 100+ yards off. i don’t understand. i’m about to return it but i’d figure ask around to see if anyone else is having problems so i can know if i should just hold on and wait for an update or just return it and give up on my affordable simulator dreams.

  • Could there be interference from concrete or fans or metal? I get short distances, but nothing too remarkable; certainly not like this. You could try calibrating tipped forward and raising the altitude in the weather settings until you get the desired distances.

  • Me too distances are like using 2 irons low

  • I feel your pain.  Just got mine. Spent many hours prior to getting it researching all the possible setup issues.  I updated the software as soon as I received it.  Used a tape measure to set it up so my distance from the screen is 10' and distance from unit to ball is 7'.  My shots are 2-3 clubs short.  Tried moving stuff around in the garage thinking something might be interfering.  Nothing helped.  I'm about ready to give up on it. It was an open box open but looks like it was never used. Maybe the unit is bad??

  • Got some little improvement working on altitude parameter in meteo, but you have to change it any time you start a new session. Further it works different with wedges, irons and driver so is not the best solution. I’ve tried using R10 outside and indoor with a net and had the same results. I miss trying it at the driving range. I’ve submitted the matter to Garmin technical support and hope to get an answer or better a solution in next App update (now I’ve 4.3)

  • I spent another 3 hours today messing around with it and can not get it to read correct distances. I've tried covering the concrete between the unit and the ball as well as between the ball and the screen and it makes no difference. The only thing left that might be causing an issue is my riding mower and water heater however both are blocked by the screen so I doubt they would be interfering with the radar.  It should not require changing the altitude to a value that's not close to where you normally play.  I'm basically at sea level and bumping up to 9000 feet barely helps at all. Out of over 100 balls hit maybe 2 have gone my usual distance and those 2 shots I went at it waaay harder than I do on the course.  I know my yardages pretty well. I usually miss pin-high. I want this for indoor only.  Unfortunately it seems like trying to crack a safe to get it set up just right so it works properly. Or the unit is defective.

  • Hi.

You can get a week trial at awesome golf.

The only difference between awesome golf app and garmin golf app is the algos to calculate distances etc based on the received info from the R10 unit.

    So why is this useful?

Well, if Your distance in the Garmin Golf app is lets say 20 yards shorter than in the Awesome Golf app, then You know that the R10 unit is providing the correct data, but the Garmin Golf app is not calculating correctly.

This has been the case for a while, but should be better in the latest releases of the Garmin Golf app.

Also many seems to have better distance calculation with use of RCT ball, or a metal dot on Your normal ball should also work.

Calculating back spin is very difficult for radar based technology on very short shots, and too high backspin will result in shorter distance. With RCT balls or metal dot the backspin is actually measured in release 4.3 of the R10 unit firmware, and should give better distance calculation.

Drawback I have seen is that some club info appears to be lost when using these balls. And for me currently the club path/speed/attack angle is more important than correct distance. Mapping my clubs distances I can do on a range where the R10 is very accurate. But for playing hth I would consider putting on a metal dot on my ball.

  • That was a very good tip from odd tore. Thank you. I tried the Awesome Golf app today and my distances were very accurate (same distances that I shoot on real courses). For the first time since I got my R10 I actually enjoyed the session. The HTH in Garmin app was always leaving me 10-15% short of reality, even if I set altitude to maximum etc. So now I know that the problem all along was not the R10 unit but the Garmin app! Garmin should try to learn from Awesome Golf as their algorithms are obviously far superior.

I cannot understand how some people say they get accurate numbers with the Garmin app. I adjusted my setup so many times and it never solved the short distance issue. I always made sure I was using the latest versions too.

So now I'm happy with my R10 but unhappy that I have to use third party software to get quite accurate numbers. Using HTH was detrimental to my golf game and frustrating.

  • Awesome Golf's primary difference from HTH is vertical layout with elevated tee boxes and sloped fairways, along with the ability to monkey with elevation. You are getting the exact same data as you get from the R10 in both cases.

Nobody has ever put an R10 up against a GC Quad or Trackman, hit their 7 iron, and seen distances come out persistently short. There are dozens of comparison videos out there now. Every person who says, "My unit is short, I'm bringing it to Golf Galaxy/Dicks to put it up against their launch monitor" suddenly turns quiet or changes their tune.

  • Yep, I kind of agree.

I miss info from 1658333 if the Garmin golf app appears short on a range session also, or only hth.

    Same algos for calculating.

What I have seen on hth when comparing with play on my home course is the roll. As an example one of the holes is an upslope fairway, and on hth the ball actually rolled back down, never seen in real life Slight smile

And bumping up the altitude to max in hth should definately give longer shots than real life. Most see more "accurate" numbers around 4000 ft elevation.

My frustration atm is the R10's unability to read practise balls with longer clubs. And as I have mentioned, oh so many times, the possibility to set a compensation factor for each club individually, and store it.

I will eventually build my sim to be able to hit real balls, but if I could use practise balls to train on chs, direction and attack angle, I would be happy not to risk my life and the noise.

  • In my case the distances were too short on the range (maybe 5-10%) and way too short on HTH (maybe 10-15%). But importantly, the Garmin app (both on range and in HTH) sometimes gives wayward shot path whereby you know the ball didn't curve 40m to the right with a 7 iron. David Maxwell had the very same issue when he was comparing both apps - the Garmin was sometimes way off with flight path.

I think people need to try out both and make their own judgement. I know my distances and can judge my flight paths quite well by club feel and I can say AG and Garmin are worlds apart.

Btw, I use real balls and adjusting altitude in Garmin didn't help me much at all.
