R10 shows connected but does not record shots

I recently received my R10 after ~6 months.  I ordered a mat and net and my son and I could not wait to try it out.  Nothing fancy to start out with.  Just the driving range feature in the Garmin Golf App to test the setup.  The setup is in my garage.  I have read the setup information carefully.  The net is 8 feet from the hitting spot and the R10 is 6 feet behind that spot.  The R10 and the mat are at the same level.  We were getting short numbers.  The longer the club the more the numbers were off.  I've read that many people have seen that and I was happy to spend the time doing trial and error on distances from the hitting area, covering concrete surfaces, etc.  I was able to get the numbers a little closer to normal.  But it seems the more I use it, the more unstable my connection becomes.

Many times it will simply stop detecting shots.  The R10 shows green light, then on backswing it turns red, and after shot it turns green again.  So it looks just like it does when the app shows the shot, only it just doesn't show the shot.  The app shows that the device is connected and shows the battery level fine.  I can click the sync button and run the device calibration and both appear successful.  I can't figure out why it just stops.  Closing the app and restarting it does not seem to help, nor does restarting the device.  It does't make sense, but the only way I've been able to make it start working again is to tell my phone to forget the bluetooth device and re-pair.  Then it works again for maybe 20 minutes and then the problem happens again.

I do have the latest app version (Android) and the latest R10 firmware.  We even tried it on my son's iPhone and we see the same issue.

The device doesn't seem to be overheating or anything like that.  I don't know if I got a lemon or what.  I could live with the occasional shot not registering, but that's not what's going on here.  It works fine for a bit and then simply stops working.  The app and the device lights make it appear as if everything should be working fine, but it simply stops registering any shots.

Is there some sort of app diagnostics that I can enable to help debug the issue?  If I can't get this resolved I'm going to have to return the device, but I really want this to work.

Thanks,
Warren

  • My app version is 2.6.1 and my R10 firmware version is 4.0.0.

  • I am having the same issue. Same firmware 4.0. I have it working for the first 5-10 shots then it just stops working correctly. I see the green light. Hit and see it doesn’t pick up. I tried to just look at the unit without hitting while in position and seems the red light keeps coming and going.

I am testing at a range with proper alignment and 7 feet between the unit and ball.

  • I have the same issue, Garmin sent me another R10

And it did exactly the same recorded 5 shots then nothing , I have tried everything deleting the app, deleting the R 10, I'm so frustrated don't know what to do next

  • hey man just bought one yesterday and having the same issues. did you find a way to fix the problem by chance?

  • I haven't tried it since this post.  I'm not sure if it's hardware or software.  It's just been too dang hot here for golf.  I'm playing in a tournament next weekend so maybe I'll dust it off and see if it's still an issue.  If so I guess it's time to return it.  Right now it's a $600 paper weight.  I had hoped someone from Garmin would have chimed in here but I guess that's too much to ask.

  • Hello, please review the following support articles:

Please also make sure the Golf app is up to date (check app store).

Are you able to successfully calibrate the R10 in the second mentioned article?

Does moving the R10 a foot or two closer to the net make any difference?

If issues persist, please reach out to the Golf Product Support team directly. We are happy to further assist.

  • I just wanted to post an update.  I had not used the R10 since posting this.  Recently I broke it out, updated the app and firmware, and have been using it for about a week without seeing this issue.  My setup is the same, so it must have been in the firmware or the app.  But either way, it seems to be working fine now.

  • I have same issue finally I find is net too close to me. Keep net 2 meter will be find

  • I have had the Approach for about 6 months now, this used to be an issue that happened maybe once in every two games. Since the most recent update, this has been happening 6 or 7 times every time I use my driver. This is clearly a software issue from Garmin. I guess my question now is, "Is this because of Home Tee Hero being poorly written or is it the Garmin device itself.

  • If this is occurring specifically when you use your driver, you likely need to make an adjustment between the distance of the R10 and your shot location...or an adjustment increasing the distance between your shot location and the target location.

The absolute minimum distance between the shot location and the target location (if using indoors) is 8ft...however, all swings and indoor environments are different and so if using a club that has a lower launch angle...higher club head/ball speed...adjustments should be made to configure the best results for capturing shots with your driver.

Raising or lowering the height of the R10 in relation to the surface the ball is being hit off of may also help...especially if you are using a tee with the ball, as the height of the shot is going to be much higher compared to the ball when hitting off the deck.

If you continue to have any concerns, please reach out to Garmin Support to have a conversation with a golf specialist, so more details on your concern can be gathered...along with further solutions for the concern.
