4 Club Difference in Distance

Hello All,

This is day 2 of owning a brand new R10. After months of anticipation and high hopes, I'm pretty disappointed.

All of my clubs are 20-60 yards short. I am outdoors hitting into a large net. I've moved the unit forward, back, up, down, tilted down, and titled up (Re-Calibrating after each significant change). I've also moved the hitting mat, removed the hitting mat, and finally moved the net without any success. I updated to 4.0 via Garmin Express but made no difference. I tried Home Tee Hero and the E6 driving range as well but the inaccurate readings continued.

What else can be done on my end? I really want to make this work and believe it is user error but as the hours of experimentation/frustration go by, I'm thinking it's a dud unit.

I understand taking it to the range is an option but I bought it for the backyard so that seems rather futile.

Appreciate any and all suggestions!

  • Maybe an impact screen works differently, perhaps almost dropping the ball straight down and resulting in less interference with the readings? Don't know enough about it but thought I'd mention it.

  • Really? wow I went to the range 2 days ago and they are pretty much bang on. I've been three times outdoors no issues. Just this stupid net indoors is really frustrating. Theres a post with 100s of replies and 55000+ views on this forum. Seems really common now. GSPro Sim people are mentioning is more accurate? I havent looked into that one yet.

I received mine on 5/22/22 and updated to v4.0. I am also having these distance issues and they have been consistently off by 10-25 yards. I've tested at home using the alignment guide, and tried it at the range with the same results. If it doesn't work in both settings, this is basically useless other than for checking shot alignment (which I thought it read accurately). Definitely hate the idea of having to buy e6 for a work around. Right now there are too many conditions that need to be met in order for this to work correctly, and even then, it still hasn't worked. Either everyone is using this incorrectly, or there is a widespread flaw. Either way, I am seeing the same posts from the 2021 launch production batch. Now that the second production batch has arrived, we are seeing the same issues. Outlook does not look good for this, however, I find it strange that it works with e6 elevation change. Why can't Garmin App add this metric in Setup, if that truly is the fix?

  • Very strange variety in spot on numbers and wildly off (20-30 yards). I got word that there has been chip changes in the batches due to the supply chain issues. Makes sense but seems like some are great and others not so much. My ball/swing speed numbers seem believable but I don't know for sure. Don't think I should have to test it against a high end unit to declare it a dud. I've come to the conclusion either my unit is reading 1 of the 4 measured metrics wrong, or there is a flaw in the distance algorithm. Either way, hard to justify $600+ plus the setup for something that is 4-7.5x off from their advertised +/- 5 yards.

  • same issue here...rec'd the unit today and yardages seem off...especially for HTH which seems even more off.  really hoping garmin addresses this issue or at least confirm they are working on a fix.  if a prgr unit can measure distances accurately thats a fraction of the cost, theres no reason why the garmin shouldn't be just as accurate.  where is the garmin guy on this forum?

  • There's at least 30 forum posts on this and they just redirect you to the calibration page when Garmin does reply.

I tried HTH today couldn't get a single drive over 180yds. I'm a steady 220. Also my 5 wood, 3 hyb and 3 wood went the same distance. Greeeat....

And yes e6 elevation works perfectly. If you have IOS it's free with 5 courses, mini games and range/practice areas.

  • I played 27 real holes today. The yardages are short. I'll accept I MAY swing slightly slower into a net vs on the course but that should be 5-10 yards max. BS to have to spend $350 on awesome golf or another software for it to work correctly

  • Awesome golf has a 15 day free trial. Distances were as short as HTH so it's a waste of money.

  • I am having the same issues.  The longest I've been able to get the device to say I hit it with the driver is about 175 yards, at top tracer driving ranges it's usually more like 250 yards+ and on the course pretty much always around 230.  All of the clubs are reading short by some way - 8 iron is at about pitching wedge distance.  I'm also hitting into a net (from more than 8ft away - the net is an 8ft cube and I stand a few ft away from the net so it's probably 10-11ft away at least), and have the unit level on a solid floor behind the hitting area (have tried at various distances), and have also tried the various 'fixes' suggested to no avail.  Seems to me that the unit just doesn't give an accurate reading of distance into the net, which is disappointing given it's why I bought it (and there is no indication in the promotional info that it doesn't work other than if it can see the full ball flight - in fact it's sold as something that you can use with a simulator set up).  Not sure what to do, is Garmin actually going to fix these units?  A launch monitor that can't even tell you the correct distance is pretty hopeless...

  • I want to post my own positive experience. Not disputing other people's issues, but just wanted to add another data point. I received my R10 yesterday and used it for the first time today. Apart for a few unread shots (short chips or too much waggling), it seemed accurate to me (at least distance, direction and shape).

I am awaiting arrival of my impact screen and wanted to do a quick test of the R10 right away. Mainly because reading about all the issues and inaccuracies other people have was worrying me. So, I did a quick setup in my garage where my simulator build will start soon.

My test setup (which is far from ideal):

    • Garage (one "bay" of a 3-car size garage)
    • 9 ft. ceiling height with living space above
    • Floor:  Concrete - I hit off a cheap mat, had R10 on a folded blanket about the thickness of the mat, I laid an outdoor rug under the net to keep the balls from bouncing too much
    • Distance from R10 to ball: 6-7ft, distance from ball to net: 8-9ft.
    • Net - a basic hitting net with fiberglass and steel poles (Bownet knockoff).
    • Other possible causes of interference -
      • just to the right of my net is a refrigerator (close enough my daughter put a good dent in it on a miss-hit).
      • Behind the net was some adjustable shelves (metal wire with metal shelf standards screwed into wall) with some lumber, a metal bike rack and other junk on them.
      • I hung one old mattress topper (3" memory foam) behind the net to try to keep the ball from hitting the shelves. This was just a twin size and was a bit left of center target area. Incidentally, if you want free memory foam for a build, go to a college campus dorm on move out day- lots of kids throwing them away at my daughter's school. Unfortunately, I only had room to grab one.
      • I have a column a few feet right of my hitting area (6x6 post wrapped in sheetrock)

My results: I think distance was about what I see hitting off a mat at a range. I tend to hit fat, so a cheap mat like I have slows me down a lot on my mishits. For example, my 7-iron is usually 145-150 carry with the occasional 155+ with slight draw. That's exactly what the R10 showed. My 4 hybrid is typically 190-195 carry with the occasional pull-hook, pretty much what I saw with the R10. I still don't trust that i won't slam my club into the wall and notice that I'm not fully following through with longer clubs. I also am afraid of putting a wedge over my 6-foot high net on a full swing, so those clubs were harder to evaluate.
