Issues with Short Chips. R10 not Reading them.

Ever since the 3.60 update I have been having issues with my R10 not seeing short chips (anything close to the green where your backswing is significantly shorter).

I remember with 3.60 they did something to reduce the affect "club waggle" had in a preshot routine.  The R10 thought your swing was starting and then would miss your actual swing. Ever since that I'm having a heck of a time getting it to read chips. I have to use such a long back swing for a short chip to get the R10 to see the swing, it is extremely frustrating and will only teahc terrible habits.

I use my R10 indoors. R10 is 7ft behind ball and the ball is 11ft to the impact screen.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

  • On 3.7 I am seeing this for chip shots inside 2 yards regardless of ball flight. I tried cycling the power on the unit, full practice swings, different wedges. What worked was modulating the speed on my backswing.

  • I called support about this and they indicated they haven't seen any reports of the issue. I've seen a pretty good number now. Any ideas on this?

I haven't seen or heard any other reports other than this post. have you been able to update to 3.70 (released late last week) and still notice this issue? when you make those chip shots, is the LED on the R10 red?

  • I wait for the flashing green light, it does turn red as the backswing initiates, but then doesn't record the shot. I pop ball up high or low without any difference. I get the sense it could be due to the slow club speed being re-interpreted as non-shot, but I don't know.

  • sorry about comment should be "inside 20 yards," not 2 yards.

Is there a long pause in your swing? By modulating your swing, are you increasing your backswing to get it to see those chip shots?

  • Yes, I increased backswing speed and distance in the hopes of it picking up the shot.

Our suggestion for troubleshooting this issue is as follows:

The length and speed of your backswing may affect the device’s ability to detect your chip shot. If the device is not detecting your chip shot, you may need to prolong or accelerate your backswing.

    Detecting Chip Shots

    1. While observing the status LED, take a practice swing
    2. If the status LED turns red, it is detecting your shot
    3. If necessary, take a practice swing at a different length or speed
    4. Repeat this process until the status LED turns red

As a last resort, you can try calibrating your Approach R10, if you have iOS. The steps can be found in the follow support article. If the issue persists, and you haven't had issues prior to 3.70, I will want to let our development team know.

  • Hey Rob. You bet I’m updated to 3.70, no difference with how it read chips going from 3.6 to 3.7.

I noticed the issue coming from the original version to 3.6.

The R10 will only switch to red when you bring your club back really far. I’d say around a 3/4 swing and then it will go red and will pick up your chip.

However, that isn’t ideal. It would sure be nice to be able to chip naturally.

  • I took it to the range last night and the issue did not replicate. It is happening in my garage only, which has some environmental issues. I'll see what I can work out with the suggestions offered.
