Club speed/ smash factor

I tried my new R10 on the range for the first time yesterday and I got some strange readings. I think the club velocity is read/calculated to low, at least when I use my driver. I had the G80 earlier and my typical club speed with my driver was 95 mph. As the example below show, my club speed is 84 mph which seems way to low. The smash factor is, as a result, also way to high. There is not possible to get a smash factor of 1.59, the best I can hope for is around 1.42- 1.45 on a good day. If I apply a normal smash factor to the ball speed of 134 mph I get a club speed of 94 mph which is more inline with what I would expect. Anyone else having the same issue? My unit is running on v. 3.40

I have also read a lot in this forum about the importance of alignment of the unit. To get it perfectly lined up with the target line I understand (that is also given in the manual) since the measure things like launch direction ect based on this line. However, some people take about the need of having the unit (the tripod) completely level with the range mat. If that is a factor, how does the unit "measure" driver shots using different peg heights? Any thoughts on this?

I don’t see those type of numbers on my unit. Rather 3-4mph faster vs a trackman 119 vs 115

It has been my understanding that club speed and back spin are estimated through calculations from ball speed and trajectory.

I believe the device measures club speed, path and AOA directly .. spin and spin axis would need to take into account path and AOA measurements surely in order to estimate face angle and spin loft which are then used to calc spin.. perhaps Garmin Rob can confirm!

Hi. If the club speed is correct, then the ball velocity is wrong since there is no way I hit the ball so well thta I create a smash factor of 1.6. I contacted Rob and he told me to try to level the tripod exactly at the same level as the range mat. I will try that later today, hope it helps

I saw the exact same thing. Smash factors in the 1.6 range. My typical driver clubhead speed is about 95 and the ball speed is usually around 141-142 when I look at my mevo stats. That produces a SF of about 1.48-49. Same driver, same balls and just about the same swing and radically different numbers. So far I do not trust this thing...

Alignment of the unit seems key to accuracy of the unit. I took mine to the range the first and just estimated 6' with two lengths of my wedge. It did fine. Shot shape and distances seemed within reason for a $600 device. So a stand seems optional to me... I did pick up a compact laser level, fits in the case and an easy check during setup at the range.

The unit is also sensitive to the swing of golfers in the next bay as well as any pre-shot routine you might have. Check that the unit isn't showing a red ("busy") indicator light before swinging. It takes about 2 seconds before resetting to blinking green ("ready").

Had another session at the range yesterday after updating to 3.6. The distance was not that bad, but I only have visual reference points out in the range (like 100 m, 150 m and 200 m signs). The club speed was again off on some shots (especially driver) giving a smash factor above 1.5. What was really concerning was the angle of attach and launch angle. I admit that I am not a pro golfer, but to have a range in the AOA from -7.9 degrees to + 9.3 is not what I would expect.

I noticed the same thing with the AOA. No matter how much I hit up on the ball, I wouldn’t get better than -7.
