Why your distances are off and a simple fix.

I finally had time and energy to do a full session and test how much having the R10 misaligned affects shots. Here are my results.

I hit 7 irons as it's my most consistent club.

Baseline setup was the R10 centered, raised up to level of hitting mat and leveled both ways as well.

I hit 10 shots, Launch angle varied 16 to 17 degrees. Carry 190-198. (Mishits were removed). Every shot was a draw which is expected for me.

I then put the R10 on the floor below the hitting mat. Launch angle dropped about 1.5 degrees on average which took about 8-10 yards off the carry. Still only draws, everything else consistent. (This would also make shorter irons go further as it would deloft let's say a pitching wedge, but the longer the iron gets, the more it's likely to shorten carry distance)

I then un-leveled it so one side was higher than the other. All my shots became fades, regardless how hard I tried to draw it. Leveling it the other way everything became a hard hook. It also missed picking up spin on some of these shots.

I then leveled it but had it pointed either too far left or right. This affected the swing path results but nothing else. Curvature, Launch angle and spin were consistent.

Lastly I hit some drivers. Numbers were spot on when fully aligned. I'm a bit shorter in my garage until I completely trust swinging in the smaller space, but I have had this happen on all simulators I've used.

In summation. Use a level and tape off your center lines. Make sure your R10 doesn't sit below or above the mat. Your numbers will be accurate.

  • Assume you mean the base of the legs are 1/2 below mat

  • Not sure what you all think of the Toptracer golf range system, but I just came back from a session and took my Garmin.  I thought my distances were off but now I think it is because I was hitting into a net in my garage something I had never done before getting my Garmin R10.  The carry distances were spot on (remember R10 is +-3 yards) I hit around 100 balls and carry distance was within this limit on all balls.  The roll out or total carry was mostly within this also.  If you hit a good shot, it is on the money.  Roll outs on low shots varied between the R10 and the Toptracer.  Definitely good enough for me.  Overall shot shapes were correct from what I could see I had nothing that went the wrong way (went left showed right or vice versa) like some people have reported. This was my biggest worry. Were they the same no.  I have some data to compare but haven't done so yet.  I will post soon.

  • So here is some data Garmin R10 vs Toptracer.  I do see one ball that was completely the wrong direction. This is only five shots. I will go through more of the shots but this is pretty representative.

Not sure how this will come out on a copy paste if I can post a screen shot or excel I will do so.

Toptracer reports as curve and Offline of center or target line.  So negative is Left.  The Garmin reports Carry Deviation and Total Deviation which I don't know exactly what it means but I am guessing it is the curve of the ball from offline.

Please chime in if you know what these numbers really mean.  I am just trying to do a comparison.  One thing that is good is Carry distance.

Ball one on Garmin I would think just shows a almost straight ball offline by one yard.  Where as the Toptracer i think is telling me the ball went right of target line 4 yards and ended up offline to the left by 8yards.

Ball two is similar to ball one.

Ball three they agree but the Toptracer has more of an offline shot.

You can see ball four is totally wrong. The Garmin has the ball going right and Toptracer has it going left. Unfortunately I do not know which is correct as I don't remember the shot. I mostly was looking at the carry and total on each shot I don't remember a shot going the wrong way but I did not look at the shape every time.

Ball five is similar to one and two.  The Toptracer has the ball going right to start and ending up left where as the Garmin has the ball going left the whole way.
