Almostgolf Practice balls

I received my R10 Friday, I tested hitting into a net outdoors, after hitting several real golf balls, I tried hitting Almostgolf practice balls. The result was positive. The R10 picked them up and measured distance fairly accurately. I have more testing to do. I also used the R10 on an outdoor range. The distance measurements were accurate. But like others there are opportunities with slice & hook measures.
Note, at the range I had not updated firmware. I did that this morning. Now on 3.30

My experience with many Garmin devices, give them time & feedback- we will see improvements.

  • I use almost golf balls and it picks them up everytime( 95%). The ball speed and launch angle are both lower than real golf balls so the distances are short. However if you use E6 you can increase the altitude which can make the distances pretty good for your irons. 3 wood is still 20/30 meters short and forget about the driver. But can play most course as my 4 iron ca. Get me 190-200m off the tee. Just means more practice with long irons.

  • Hi, I started using my Callaway Foam balls in the basement where I can not do a full swing and they seem to work pretty good for wedge shots and chip shots. That is all i am practicing in the basemen t and do my full swing work outside. I just would like some cool e6 or Garmin short game practice

  • I can’t get any readings on my driver or long irons with the garmin r10 when using Almost Golf balls…any suggestions? It’s almost like they fly too fast and the unit can’t pick them up. Wedges through 7 iron get detected every single shot but my 6 and 5 are spotty and my 4 and driver almost never get picked up.

  • Same issues here with real golf balls.  Long irons and driver is unusable.

  • I have the exact same issue, and so far has not been able to resolve it.

2 weeks until my new garage is finished so will give it a serious try then.

What I noticed however, is that tilting of the unit had an effect on smash factor and distance.

So I would try to elevate the unit an inch or so, tilt it forward and then calibrate the unit.

I believe low ball flight may be the issue, and possibly longer distance from mat to wall will help.

Ball flying too fast is not the issue as ball speed with these balls is way lower than real balls.

  • Quick update for anyone interested.  I purchased some Sci-Core golf balls, which weigh 20 grams (about 7 grams heavier than Almost Golf balls) and all of my non read issues are 100% resolved.  I tested last night in my garage, which is a simple set up hitting into a painters drop cloth.  Every single shot I hit with the Sci-Core golf balls registered.  I'm beyond excited to now be able to play indoors with the softer practice balls this winter!  If anyone else out there is having issues with Almost Golf balls registering with long irons and driver, which I have read a lot about, this solves those problems!

  • Hi.  I am having issues with the R10 not picking up the majority of my driver & 3 wood shots when using Almost Golf Balls.  Just wondering if you are still having success with the Sci-Core golf balls & the R10 reading every driver & 3 wood shot?  Have you noticed any differences in the shot data  between the Sci-Core & Almost Golf balls?  Do you think they are safe to use indoors? Will they damage a plasterboard wall or crack a window on a mishit?

  • Yes still having great success with the Sci-Core balls. I’ve been using them in my garage and even the occasional mishit has caused no damage at all to both drywall plaster and a window (I’ve hit a window three times now and can safely say I have no fear of it cracking). The R10 reads every shot and also picks up draws and fades very well using the garmin golf app. I completely quit using the almost golf balls.

  • What distances do You get compared to almost golf balls?

Being heavier I would assume going a bit further?

  • It’s not drastic since they’re both designed to slow down mid air to get less distance in real life but I noticed about 20 yards extra on most clubs. The biggest difference is getting actual readings on driver and long irons. When hit well (for me) I can get a 210 yard reading on my driver with the Sci-Core balls and about 185 with my 5 wood.  It makes playing the hometown hero or awesome golf full rounds from slightly short tees achievable and enjoyable.
