GPSMAP 67 pause activity and Strava

Hello, I've a question on activities that have a pause in them and how these show up on Strava. Situation: At the start of a hike I start activity recording on my GPSMAP 67. After some time I stop the activity recording. Then after I short while I start activity recording again. After finishing the hike I stop the recording and save it. This results in a single activity FIT file. When this FIT file is uploaded to Strava (via Garmin Connect), the Strava activity contains only the first part of the hike.

When I look at the contents of the FIT file with fitfileviewer.com, I see three Event messages:

* a timer event with type "start" when recording was started

* a timer event with type "stop all" when recording was stopped the first time

* a second timer even with type "stop all" when the activity was saved

It seems that Strava only processes up to the first event with type "stop all".

Is this how a pause should be represented in the FIT file? I would expect a second timer event with type "start" when the recording was resumed. Or is this just how the GPSMAP 67 works, as it has no option to manually pause a recording.

  • Looks like my gpsmap 66 is affected as well. There should be a start event after the stop all event, I checked with a fit file from my watch. This issue also causes strava to disregard any data in the fit file after the stop all event.

  • The start timer event is indeed not registered in the FIT file when resuming activity recoding. Strava will only import the part until the first stop event.

Garmin released a software update for their most recent outdoor handhelds but it looks like the 66 series was not updated…

Technically Strava could also create a workaround for this issue because other platforms like Komoot do import the complete activity even with start timer events missing.

  • I called garmin support. They'll be forwarding my notes to the dev team. I'm linking to this thread. Hopefully they will release an update for my unit as well.
