This is a known issue that we will have a fix for in a future SDK release.

Unable to connect to simulator on the first attempt

MacBook Air M1, MacOS every version since 2020

Every SDK version, currently tested with Connect IQ SDK 6.4.2, Connect IQ SDK 7.0.2 Beta

VS Code 1.87.2

VS Code Extension v1.0.10

Steps to reproduce:

1) Make sure CIQ Simulator is not running

2) Try to run any app from VS Code menu 'Run Without Debugging'. Most of the time the simulator window pops up empty, and in the DEBUG CONSOLE 'Unable to connect to simulator' message is shown. Once the simulator window is up, the second attempt to run the app usually succeeds. But not always. Sometimes it becomes impossible to run an app without restarting VS Code. Only very rarely the simulator is able to launch and run the app without fail on the first attempt.
  • this experience breaks my heart. been trying to develop a watch app on Mac OS and it's like a russian roulette - sometimes the sim works sometimes there's no way to bring it to life. do people get windows machines just to develop for garmin?

  • Unfortunately, this won't work on a Mac, because the simulator keeps crashing, you just can't have it running for long... Slight smile On Windows, I always get the sim starting as expected and it crashes very rarely

  • What works for me with Win11 and many SDKs (including 6.4.2) is to leave the sim running and just run my app in from VSC again.  This has been happening for a long time, and it seems to be related to the time it takes to get the sim running from VSC.

  • Same problem here. I end up killing the Simulator and restarting it if it doesn't work after the second time.

  • I've browsed them, but my impression was that those reports from years ago related to people being unable to connect to the simulator at all. So I was not sure if they are still relevant. I can connect to the simulator once it is running, so it is not a blocking point. Just frustrating, since the simulator crashes constantly, so have to restart it again and again.

I wonder if it's just me, maybe there's a trick to make the simulator on Mac useable? So far it is a never ending frustration for me. It's like not even a pre-Alpha quality from what I see, and it never improves despite Garmin claiming so. It's a real disaster in comparison to the Windows version.
