367RunFields is Live

The new version adds TimerTime, also adds the seconds on the timer once you reach > 1hr. (I'm told that seeing seconds is especially important for runners)

Note for all : Please refer to the app store for the latest in the NEW direction the app/datafield is going.
Go PRO! GO UnLimited!!

  • TOD (Time Of Day)
  • Timer Time
  • Pace 10s / Current Speed (in KM or Miles)
  • Cad
  • HR
  • Dist (either Miles or KM)
  • Avg Pace / Avg Speed

Many Thanks to SimonMcMullen for his code guidance.
Many Thanks to TORSTEINVH for his guidance on how to make an moving average (tho it's still a hack and not pretty code)

Dont do that. The community would lose an excellent developer. Rather, I'd suggest going back to the free model and, together with other developers of most used apps, watch faces, widgets, etc., lobby Garmin to give you a way to make some money off of your work and to communicate more effectively with your end-users. After all, it IS your work that is extending Garmin's platform. You should be able to monetize that to some extent. Even if they ultimately take a piece of it. Worked great for a little company called Apple.

    Look forward to future developments.

I really liked your datafields, but this sudden change to a Trial and Pro Version is just sad.
  • Pro Vesion screw up

Maybe if there was some meaningful additional functionality besides not ceasing to function in the middle of a long run, it would be more palatable to make a payment. As it is, I don't believe too many people would pay for something that was originally offered for free.

Out of curiosity, are there any other apps/widgets/faces on Connect IQ that have any kind of payment system set up?

    my suggestion:
Take the plunge and email him about Pro versions.
He's been AWESOME fine tuning the app for other data fields I requested.
Unfortunately it seems Garmin doesn't allow him access to all data fields, so I had to modify my original request a little.

One of my favorite fields, Lap average HR, isn't available for him. My fix was to customize the Lap Alert in the Garmin Menu. I replaced total time with Lap average HR.

I agree - but the previous donation model netted him 10 donations out of 55000 downloads. No idea how many hours the developer spent in making it and ironing out bugs - and taking a lot of flak for it not working in some cases. Even assuming the donations were $10 each (and I know they weren't all $10, because I was one of the 10) - that's not a lot of return for all that effort.
  • Making money

Forgive if I am wrong, but I was under the impression it was known through limitations and information that there would be no way of making money by making and offering apps/datafields/watchfaces. As a customer of Garmin who has spent a fair amount of money to get a multifunctional watch, which would tap in to the connect iq system, i assumed that any addition taken from this platform would be for free.

There are no tools for developers to monetize their work for a reason....you are not supposed to. If you can not/do not want to develop without getting paid for the work you have put in, then I suggest you stop or do not even start. Asking for donations is fine, there might be people out there that will respond to that (I know I have done a few times) but you should not put a crippled version out there and expect pay. You have picked the wrong platform for that, and that was obvious from the start. Even leaving the working version as is, and develop a better/more elaborate version to get when donating would have been more satisfying.

Even though I was very pleased with both the runfield and bikefield datafields, I will be un-installing them for that reason.

    Just my opinion.
  • I have just paid for both - well worth it IMO!

    Monetization

    Hey guys,

Just to be clear, the lack of direct monetization on the ConnectIQ store in no way implies that Garmin doesn't want developers to be able to make money from their work. We have a section on our developer site that details some ways that ConnectIQ developers could monetize their efforts.

Whether an app is "worth paying for" is really up to the users of that app. Some like to call it the "invisible hand of the market".
