Data Field: Peter's Negative Split

Download: https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/9...d-46a0ef12da35

It is said many world records have been run by making use of a negative race split pace strategy. Can you apply the same tactics and best your PR?

Peter's Negative Split assists you in running the first half of your race slower (negative split) or faster (positive split).

The key features this app offers to assist in negative/positive pacing yourself:
  • Target Pace for the current kilometer/mile in top row
  • Lap speed/pace gauge to indicate whether you're on target pace (green about ok, blue a little bit too fast, orange way too slow or way too fast)
  • Ahead/Behind Time indicator
  • Lap correction feature: possibility to synchronize with the board marker you see by hitting the LAP button on your watch

If you're looking for an app that helps you with an even pace effort then check out my other app: Peter's (Race) Pacer

Hi Peter, Love the app and used it this morning with good results. Do you have any plans / are you able to develop a Hi-Vis version of this (similar to the high vis pacer)? Love all the information but being an old fella I struggle to see all the information. Cheers
  • Thanks Tim.

I am considering a hi vis version of Peter's Negative Split, but it's not so straightforward due to all the information that I feel is required to be on screen to successfully pace you on a negative split (target pace, lap pace, current pace, ahead/behind time, distance, time) which is a lot more data than in the even split pacer where 3 data values are sufficient, so I'll have to think about the presentation a bit more.

If it's any help, this is how I use your Hi Viz one. I have 2 screens 1 tailored to the 3 field layout so supply and the other (photo attached) using Garmins 4 screen section. For the nes split screen all I would need is the ahead / behind field and I'll fill in the rest using Garmins 4 field one, but this only my preference.community.garmin.com/.../1300254.jpg

    Hi Peter,

Awesome, I have been waiting for this app from you! I'm a constant user of "Peter's Pacer (The App)", and negative split capability was the only function I thought missing.

I'm about to try this out right now, but could you help me undertand how it works?

    Questions:

1 - Assuming negative split mode, does the "dynamic target pace" increase in finite steps after each km, or does it progressively get faster (linearly with no steps) throughout the entire run?
2 - How are you calculating the "dynamic target pace"? Let's say my target pace is 5:00min/km (300 seconds / km). If I select a Negative 3% pace tactic (3% of 300 seconds is 9 seconds), does that mean the dynamic target pace will start at 5:09min/km, mid target distance be 5:00min/km and at the end of the target be 4:51min/km? Or does the 3% represent the spread from start pace to finish pace, I.e. 5:04.5min/km start, 4:55.5min/km finish?
3 - I have already donated for "Peter's Pacer (The App)". Love it. I noticed you have the option to donate $15 for all apps.... Could I donate the difference ($15 minus whatever I've already donated) and unlock all your awesome apps?? :) :) Either way, you will be getting my money.

Cheers for the awesome work, keep it up.

PS. I actually ran my first race as a pacer. My local parkrun - 5km. We have kilometre marker points meaning I could calibrate my distance during the run. We had a group of 6 people, with 3 people finishing just in front. Awesome!
  • I'm lenient, just remind me in the donation message :)

You'll have to run progressively faster as the race goes, the split times you'll experience on the watch will match more or less the values that this calculator renders: https://runcalc.net/#split

Super! It's great fun to pace races, isn't it?
I can't wait till my next marathon pacing job :)
  • Released v1.1:
    - (only for connect iq 2 devices) added option to warn with a vibration and/or beep when the required lap pace is too slow and/or too fast (it only warns when you're going from in the required pace zone to being too far ahead/behind of required lap pace). Both the too slow warning as the too fast warning buzz/beep defaults to being off.
  • I love the app, thanks for making it. I've been playing with it lately and may used it in an upcoming marathon this month. I have a couple of suggestions:

    (1) I like the pre-activity screen on your original app (peter's race pacer). Any thought of added that to this one? It's very nice b/f a race to double check that everything is set correctly before hitting start. This week I had a training run where I used the negative split pacer and, somehow, I had changed my lap distance from 1609 back to 1000 meters. Not the end of the world in a training run, but if it happened in a race I'd be bummed!

    (2) This is more likely an idea for another app, but I would love the ability to either take a warm up and or cool down into effect to better use the app for training runs. I see two ways this could work. The first is that you could have the option of just putting in you preferred pace for each lap. Obviously this would require the user to know what they wanted to do for each lap, but it would add a lot of flexibility for those that do, with the added bonus of being able to do a slower lap or two at the beginning to get warmed up before the "race" kicks in. A second option would be to include a "warm up" check box in settings. The idea being that the "race" doesn't start until after the lap button is pressed the first time. Obviously I could just do two runs, but this skews the number of runs a week, which is a stat I like to look at over time.

Just some thoughts. Overall love the app, and love that you make it easy to pay for your stuff. Was very happy to send you $$$ for a key to all your apps.

    Regards,

    Greg
  • Forgot to mention:

    (3) I'd like to see Garmin's "running power" number instead of heart rate. I think this is an option in your standard pacer. any chance you can add that to this one as well?

    -Greg
  • Thanks Greg.

    As to your questions:
1/ Pre-activity screen is on the to do list (has been for a while - too much apps, not enough time :) ). In this pre-activity screen I would indeed show the configured lap size, but I also would like to list the schedule of the expected km-paces/mile-paces.

2/ There have been similar requests for Peter's (Race) Pacer, but I think a race app should focus on races so it's unlikely I'll add a warmup mode to this app. But for the negative race split app this shouldn't be such a big issue I'd think as the gauge indicator will show whether you are on track with the expected pace for the kilometer at hand. Just ignore the gauge during your warm-up and let it build up some behind time / or alternatively (and maybe less desirable) do not record your warmup mile?

3/ Garmin's running power implementation is not available to 3rd party data fields, but I can enable the possibility to show power from an actual (running/biking) power meter (such as a Stryd device). (added this to my to do)
  • Thanks, Peter, that all makes sense. A list of paces would be nice. I know it's based on the link above, but I'm still a little hesitant to use the screen in an actual race without knowing *exactly* what paces it's going to prescribe. Are the paces based on that calculator exactly?

I understand on the warm up lap. You make a good suggestion. I'll just not record the warmup / cool down, or record it separately. Thanks again.

Understand on the Garmin running power ... I didn't realize they didn't make this available. I wish they would since I've only got two CIQ fields to work with. Could you offer cadence instead of HR?
