How to Use (Please Read):
1.) Watch must be worn on your wrist!
2.) Watch hand MUST be on the MOVING Elliptical Arm.
-- i.e. your hand and watch must move with the elliptical or the app will not work.
3.) Hold the elliptical arm with your watch hand 'loosely'. This allows your watch to have more sudden movement.
For example, when you pull the elliptical arm, allow your watch hand to pull away from the handle (1/2 inch or 1 cm) and when you push the elliptical arm, your hand will quickly push against the elliptical handle. This sudden movement is needed for the watch to interpret a revolution.
4.) Adjust distance and speed.
--Configure in watch, use menu button, while in activity. (VAHR long press screen)
--Configure in connect app or Garmin express https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?332843-How-to-App-Settings
-The default "Stride Length" is for a Sole E20.
-Every elliptical brand/model reports distance differently, so configuration is necessary.
-The default will provide distance and speed for other brand but values will differ.
-The easiest way to adjust is to A.) workout for ten minutes, B.) the adjust Stride Length until the watch distance matches the elliptical value.
5.) Chest HRM (3, red or blue) will give improved results.
6.) Bike Cadence Sensor with HRM gives the best results.

Requirements:
- IQ 1.3 or higher
- Activity Tracking Steps: ON
-Optional: Chest HRM and Bike Cadence Sensor (best accuracy)

Known Deficiencies:
-(Garmin Bug) 'Main' Distance field and Garmin's Main Speed Graph are not reporting in connect.garmin.com or connect app.
--I cannot change this, it a Garmin thing, however values may show in third party site. i.e. strava, etc.
-Workaround: Both of Distance and Speed are shown as an IQ data field or as an IQ graph.

Displayed connect data
--Speed as mph/km/h or Steps per Minute
--RPM
--Distance
--Momentary Energy Expenditure graph (https://www.firstbeat.com/en/consumer-products/features/#4)

Displayed watch data
-Speed, Distance, RPM, Calories, Heart Rate, Average Heart Rate, Elapsed Timer, Time of Day
-Heart Rate is completely configurable and color coded.
-Configure Heart rate zones in Garmin Connect or Garmin Express using the generic
-Battery meter uses the entire screen for reliability and acts as a divide to help focus one the upper fields.
-All Displays in ether statute or metric
-Fields are auto-adjust for all data ranges for maximum readability through out your entire activity.
-Second page of data, 11 different fields to choose in configuration.
--Speed, Distance, Elapse Timer, Calories. Energy Expenditure, heart rate (color), avg heart rate (color), RPM, Avg RPM and temperature.

Start Display Abbreviations
cad = cadence ready. (displays last value)
b = connected to phone with connect app running
hr= Heart Rate monitor sensor detected. (displays last value)
temp= temperature sensor detected. (displays last value)

In Development: Ant+ Speed Sensor input, distance reporting as meters
Current Release:
v1.2.1 Better and more accurate cadence with watch only configuration.
v1.2.0 may contain cadence display issues with watch only configuration
v1.2 Corrected: Cadence from watch only, Semi-round watches HR display now working,
-Added: (experimental) Ant+ Speed Sensor and can be view on second page.

connect app
data average rpm is ok
graphs are not labeled and data looks ok.
There is a distance graph, needs removed.

connect.garmin.com
6 APRIL 2017 https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1661740413
all data and values 98% accuracy with distance.

Reporting Errors and Ideas
In order to correct the problem please send/post the following:
-error description
-give watch model, firmware & iq version
-configuration info
-if "!", please send the error log(s). Connect your watch to a PC and it is It's located at {watch}\garmin\apps\logs. Copy file and attach to post or email me the info and log.

  • One thing I noticed. Before, when I did ellipticals as an "Other" workout, then changed it to Elliptical, tapiriik.com would sync the workout to Strava and Runkeeper. But now that I'm using the Elliptical app, the workouts are not being transferred. Not a high priority item, just curious if you have any ideas of what could be causing this to act differently. In the meanwhile, the app is definitely helping to keep me on the elliptical, which in turn is helping me to shed off a bit of weight before my half next month. Thanks again.

It is working with the direct Garmin to Strava link, but i'm unsure of Garmin -> Tapiriik -> Strava\runkeeper. Perhaps Tapiriik cannot handle the SDK FitContribution which adds the custom data to support thegraphs and data.

    Works Great

When I first downloaded this app and used it with just the watch, I wasn't sure it would be useful for me. The cadence graph envelope was correct, but the average was about 60% of what it should have been, suggesting to me that there a lot of missed readings. With the addition of a bike cadence sensor, the cadence graph and average are perfect. After a bit of calibration, my elliptical activities are spot on. 5 stars.

ps. One minor nit. The distance IQ filed says "km or mile" but is actually meters on my Fenix 5 set for miles.

    Distance question

Hi there! Love this app. Thanks SO much for making something for the elliptical. I've read through the forum and your overview on the IQ Connect store site for the app... but I'm still unclear. With my Vivoactive HR, is there a way for me to set it to accurately record the distance that I'm logging on my elliptical? I noticed the comments about updating the "throw distance" of the machine within the IQ connect settings (in the phone app), but I can't seem to find that setting anywhere. Can anyone assist? Or is distance simply non-functional altogether with this app. Thanks!

    in connect app>
    goto more (bottom right) >
select your watch (pic top right) >
    select ConnectIQ apps>
    select applications>
    select the Elliptical>
    finally settings>
make your changes then select done.
    that should be it.

you can see these changes live ''in activity'' so you can see your adjustments.
    i use the both the:
    Sole E20 1.86
    Life Fitness CLSX 2.75

    Re: Distance question

Thank you for the quick reply! That helped. For anyone else that is struggling with this, I was mis-reading the "2.000000" setting toward the top of the settings screen (that is the default when you download the app) as a version # for the app. I didn't realize it was actually an editable field for the throw distance of the machine. I followed the instructions from fbbbrown and it works great. I of course had to do some "in exercise" tweaking to get the setting just right for the Precor EFX 536i that I use most frequently. Again, for newbies to the app... each time you adjust that throw distance within the app and back out of the settings it re-syncs the updated setting to your watch, which automatically adjusts the distance recorded while you're on the elliptical so that you can compare what you see on your watch versus what the machine is telling you. Again, VERY glad that I have this app now to track my elliptical workouts. Thanks again, fbbbrown - you rock!

I am curious which cadence sensors people having success with?
  • I am curious which cadence sensors people having success with?

I found the bike sensor is 99% accourate but the chest HRM is just as acccuate. So these are the garm options:
    1.)hrm3,
    2.)hrm-run,
    hrm-tri or the
    3.)bike cadence sensor.
  • I am curious which cadence sensors people having success with?

Either of the following work very well.
Hrm-3 this is older but works well and is available on amazon less$
    Hrm-run
    Hrm-tri
    Bike cadence sensor

only getting half rpm with cadense sensor

I dont Know why. It works fine with bicycle. Any suggestions? Also how to make changes to ex distans? During activity...What does that mean?

There is an configuration item for when you use a bike cadence sensor. This is a garmin thing when cadence comes from the watch, the developer cannot determine if it is from a bike sensor, watch cadence or HRM cadence movement. the Bike Cadence will be 1/2 the value if the configuration is not set.

Check the App Info, there is a HOWTO section on how to adjust the Distance to match your elliptical brand/model.
