Data field: Flexirunner

I made a custom data field for myself, and then I found out I had to upload it to the store to be able to use settings in the Android GC app. So this thread is to support that, any questions/problems/comments, etc., let me know.

Flexirunner is (yet another) all-in-one data field, for use in a single field layout. It is designed for running, with a native look and feel.
It shows time, distance, number of laps, heart rate, pace, and cadence. It also measures running economy (http://fellrnr.com/wiki/Running_Economy), and records this and energy expenditure (https://www.firstbeat.com/en/science-and-physiology/energy-expenditure/) into the FIT file, for later display on Garmin Connect.

Please see the page in the Connect IQ app store (above) for the list of features and screenshots (to avoid re-posting the same thing here).

I have tested this field with my FR235, but it should perform identically on the FR230, FR630, FR735XT. Since version 5, Flexirunner is now also compatible with FR920XT, Fenix 3 & HR & Chronos, vivoactive & HR!
Since development is primarily focused on me having an FR235, the layout is currently most optimized for the semi-round watches.

  • ok, thanks, will try to see how the new value trends then.
  • Just noticed you released an interesting new DF : "Auxiliary Heart Rate" https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/88ce4547-7d84-4289-b2c7-3e15ca00185f - not sure if you'll be starting a dedicated thread so in the meantime I'll post here.

I noticed that if you've selected an external monitor as the main source it won't find any HR, makes sense I suppose, but in that case could it display the HR from the OHR ? Also, could it be labelled "Aux. HR" instead of "Heart Rate" in case it's displayed on the same page as the "standard" Heart Rate ?
  • Hope it's ok to continue commenting on AHR here, I'll copy/paste if a new thread is started.

Been using AHR over the past few days to try to troubleshoot the mostly odd behavior of HR on my FR235, both with the OHR and external straps. I got a very clean graph for the external HR in the AHR "channel" yesterday on an easy run. I noticed that in the "intervals" details I was only getting "Min HR" data, not average data so today for my track session I didn't use it and guess what the HR data of the external data looked rather odd in places. Might be just a coincidence of course but still...

Is there any way to get the average AHR data by lap in the "intervals page" on GC ? Thanks !

I've created a new thread (https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?370580-Data-field-Auxiliary-Heart-Rate), see reply there.
  • Thanks for starting that new topic (not linked from the CIQ download page though I think) and back to discussing Flexirunner here then.

I see that v6.1 added : "New force backlight to stay on feature, just like Timex watches! Push the start/stop button twice within 1 second to toggle setting the backlight permanently on, or adhering to whatever timeout is configured in the watch settings." that would be of particular interest on the VAHR where you can't have an unlimited BL but I'm not sure how to get it to work ?

Tried start/stop after starting an activity (so it pauses and then resumes) but the BL still goes off after the maximum 30 seconds period. Am I doing it wrong or it won't work on the VAHR ?

Also based on the fact that Auxiliary HR won't show the average value by lap in GC/GCM when Flexirunner is running (presumably because of the Running Economy DF) could there be an option to not have Running Economy activated by default for Flexirunner ? Thanks again !
  • Now that the F5 is out, any chance of a version of FR for that watch ? ;-)
  • Can you PLEASE update for the 935!!! Thank you.
  • Having just upgraded to a Forerunner 935 myself, I do indeed plan to port Flexirunner to the 935 (and Fenix 5 series, since it's the same display). Not sure when I will be able to get round to this though, so can't promise a date at the moment.
  • If you set yourself to the task, would it be possible to add Altitude as an option in the 3rd row?

As IMGrant's code is open source, I've ported it to work on 935 and F5. Have tested via sideloading and is working ok. I will email him the source code when I get a chance (next few days) so he can submit it to the CIQ store.

So do you want Altitude, or elevation gain?
