Widget: Position (with address)

Hi there,

This is a support thread for the Position widget:

https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/3ab1e334-4181-45a3-8bec-a42b8955733e

I am quite responsive and very interested to hear your experience and issues with the app.
To help me resolve your problem as quickly as possible, don't forget to note which device and language you use.

Thanks, David

    Hi,

I sent it to your private message.

If you didn't get it, please tell me

    Thank you

    Best regards,

    Patrick

    Hi,

this is very strange :-). Please can you send me a photo of the widget, how it looks on your watch? In the meantime, try to change the coordinates format to another option using application settings (accessible via the Garmin Connect Mobile application or Garmin Express). Also, make sure you have the latest firmware version installed on your Vivoactive and latest GCM version installed on your phone.

I hope we can figure it out...

    Best Regards,
    David

    Thanks,

I think I have an idea what is happening. It seems your vivoactive have problems with displaying the degree character like this one: [SUP]o[/SUP]. Strangely, it also returns different number of decimal points for latitude, than what I (and the application) expect. If you agree, I would send you one specially crafted test version which will help us find out the cause of the issue, then depending on the results I will either be able to workaround it in the app (for example by omitting or replacing the character(s) your device have problem to display, and/or by using some different method for parsing latitude/longitude from watch)., or we will be able to isolate the issue enough to file a bug to Garmin.

For other users: Patrick's vivoactive does not display coordinates at all (there is only an icon and a date on the page), or it displays only part of the coordinates (just latitutude), without the degree ([SUP]o[/SUP]) character. The behavior can be changed by using different coordinates format, but either way it does not work as intended.

  • Hi,

Thanks, I am glad you like it. The simple idea is that the application would not have just one world map included, but (very short) list of maps. Let's say USA, North America, South America, West Europe, Australia, Oceania, Asia... and that's it +/-. Then when you would like to see the map, application would know on which of these maps you are. So for example, if you are in New York, the app would know you are on World Map, North America Map and USA Map. You as a user would be able to switch between maps.

So this is something quite simple to develop and I plan to do it when I take break from another (waypoint navigation) app I am developing...
The other much more sophisticated thing I would like to develop is to allow you to prepare your trip in advance - and the app would download the more detailed maps for the area you are traveling to, for fully offline use. But I cannot promise any date for this at this point.

    Best Regards,
    David

Sounds very interesting. Like your plans! :) For some reasons I also ordered 3 again (my first f3 went back long time ago), so I will wait and look forward to use your updates on a fenix 3.

    Best regards

    Hi,

I like your widget. I do have a small problem on my Fenix 3 HR (Firmware 2.20, which is current). I am using Position version 9.6 beta

After the widget displays position and address I try to switch to the map screen by pushing the start button and just get a pause indicator where the GPS signal graph usually is.

    Hi,

most probably, you have a version without the mini-map. Updating apps can be tricky in my experience, and sometimes it does not work well in GCM. The best thing you can do is to uninstall / remove the Widget from your watch. Then restart the watch (turn off - turn on), just to be sure :-). Then install the widget again. Only now you can be quite sure you have the latest version.

This problem is general - not specific to my widget.
Let me know if it helped.

Just to be clear. The fact that you see the version 0.9.6 in the GCM settings does not always mean the app on your watch is actually 0.9.6. Unfortunately, in my experience it only means GCM has processed the latest version manifest. Not that the version has been updated in the watch...

    David,

This worked great. I uninstalled the widget, synched, turned the watch off and on and after the restart the position widget works with the map.

    Thank You!

  • New version in store

    Hi,

there is a new version in the store. It has very minor visual adjustments to keep it consistent with my upcoming Waypoint navigation app and includes some code refactoring and memory optimizations. But most importantly, it now converts GPS coordinates from DD.DDDDDD to DD MM.MMMM and DD MM SS.SS by itself instead of relying on CIQ, and adds degree (°), minute (') and second (") symbols by its own. Usage of these symbols can be disabled in the settings. Why all of that? Some users reported issues caused by device inability to display degree (°) character. If you had the same issue, you should now be able to use the app - just disable usage of these symbols using GCM or GE!

    Have a beautiful day!
  • Thanks for the updated version !
  • Thanks for the updated version !

And if you were quick and unlucky enough to download the 0.9.7 version, you should upgrade to 0.9.8. The 0.9.7 always displays 0 heading. Sorry for that. BTW, in my experience, application UPDATE never works well on my Fenix 3 using GCM. I always need to uninstall the app, and install it again to get the latest version... Maybe it is just me and few other users - who knows?
