App: Hiking

https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/39d3b5e8-67db-4517-93a8-5ec485269635

For the vivoactive, FR230, FR235, and FR630 (I don't plan support for other devices)

Please use this thread for questions, etc!

"Hike" records an activity as a hike or walk in Garmin Connect. It also allows you to mark "waypoints" (they show up as lap marks in Garmin connect, so you can see them on that map).

When hike starts, it waits for GPS, and looks for an available HRM and Tempe. At this point, with the up/down key or a screen swipe, you can switch between "hike" and "walk". Then, press "start" to start recording.

The current time, HR and temp (if the sensors are available) is displayed on all screens. While recording, pressing "back" marks a waypoint. To pause or end, press "start again", and you are given the options of "resume", "save", and "discard".

When you hit the start button and get the resume/save/discard menu, you can hit the back button. The menu goes away, and the recording remains paused (it's indicated next to the clock time on all pages). But you can scroll trough the data pages at the time. That way, if you're taking a break, you can sit and look at the current data.

When "paused" is displayed with the time, pressing start again resumes the recording.

There are 5 data screens that you can see when recording (up/down button, or swipe right/left on touch devices) (some not shown here due to forum limits)

The first screen is basic recording info: The time for the activity, the time that recording was active (when paused, this doesn't increase), the distance, and the number of waypoints marked

The second screen shows pace, avg pace, speed, and avg speed.

The third page shows the waypoints you marked. They are shown 5 at a time, and rotate every 7 seconds. They closest waypoint is shown in green.

The fourth page shows elevation data. This is GPS based, and sometime may be off. Elevation, total Ascent, and total Descent is shown.

The fifth page is location information. Your current lat/lon and heading, as well as your starting location lat/lon and the direction and distance back to start. GPS quality is also show, both in text and colors (green is usable or better)

  • some more ideas

    Hallo,

thank you for this great app. I really appreciate it. Last Sunday I used it for a 65km walk. No problems at all!
What I really would are the following features:
    * auto-lap (except this is done by your "crumbs" from now on anyway) after a userdefined distance/time, recorded in the fit-file.
    * metric speed is shown in "km/h" but titled "kph" - if there's enough space "km/h" would be easier to read (at least for me;)
    * thank you for letting me enable/disable screens in the next release.

that's it for now. THANK YOU for this great app. I will continue to use it.

Thanks for the suggestions. On this one, within Hike, it would actually be marking a waypoint, as when the .fit is being recorded, marking a waypoint actually makes a lap mark in the recording (so if you view the activity in GC, and turn on "laps", there is a "lap mark" at each waypoint.) For what would be involved, an "auto-lap" doesn't really strike me as something that many people would use.

I do this for consistency, as in "statue" "mph" is used. It seems kph and km/h are both common: (From Google)
Road speed limits are given in kilometers per hour which is abbreviated as kph or km/h.

I guess for me, I'm used to seeing kph :)
  • uk ordnance survey coordinates

First of all love the app, really well created.

In the uk it is not common to use lat/lon coordinates. Is it possible to select the format the app displays for location,
the uk ordnance survey grid reference is normally used over here.
    thanks.
  • In app settings (GCM or GE) for Hike, you have 4 options for lat/lon display:

    Degrees, degrees/mins, degrees/mins/secs, and MGRS.

MGRS (Military Grid Refence System) isn't available on the vivoactice (it uses degrees instead) as the firmware doesn't provide the function.
  • uk ordnance survey coordinates

I second @infinitystarman. UK maps have lat/long on them around the edges, but you need a big table and a metre rule to use them. I believe the Ordnance Survey publish the algorithm to do the conversion.

OSGB coordinates are obviously possible since there's a CIQ data field - can this be used with your hike app?

I should add that I'm thinking of buying a 230 to replace my Foretrex 301 and FR 15 combo and this seems to be the only thing I would need that's missing from your app.. The FT301 is good for hiking, (though a bit bulky on the wrist) because it has track logging and odometer, which can display current location and OSGB coordinates. That and a real map and compass are all you need to navigate in the UK.

    Cheers
  • Can someone that knows "uk ordnance survey coordinates" and that are in a location that uses it, try changing the lat/lon display option in app-settings to MGRS? (Military Grid Reference System) I "think" that might be what you're looking for, as I don't really know either of these systems. (MGRS is not available on the vivoactive, so you need to try it on a 23x or 630).

    Thanks!

I can tell you that MGRS has no relationship whatever with OSGB36 (aka "uk ordnance survey coordinates"/BNG). See the Wikipedia article here.

All maps from the Ordnance Survey, and many other topographical maps too, are over-printed with a 1Km grid. This makes it extremely easy to pinpoint a location anywhere in the UK to degree of precision dependant on the provided reference, eg a '6-digit' (actually two-letter+ 6-digit) reference identifies a 100m square, an 8-digit reference a 10m square and so on. The reference actually describes the SE ('bottom left') corner of the square in which the POI lies.

  • Hi. I was searching for a walking app that could count my steps and save the total. I found this and it looked good but after I saved I could not find the information nowhere. Is there any chance you could add steps information of separate activities on garmin connect? I tried activities - steps but it mixed up with total steps which is not interesting for me.

    /Hoping for the best
  • The info for daily steps is passed in your standard 24/4 fitness stuff. If you are looking for steps during a recorded activity, on GC website, If you go to full page from the activity widget (you'll see a list of all your activities). If there isn't a steps column shown (it might be past the right side of the screen and you need to scroll), click on the right of the far left box on the title line, and you'll see a down arrow, and you'll see "columns", and from there you can add a steps column. And you can drag that column to make it more visible. There might be an easier way to do this (like just changing the meanign of one of the columns) Here's part of my list of activities:

There is probably a way to do this on the mobile app too, but I'm not sure how to do that.

The data you're looking for is already in GC, but a bit hard to find :)
  • Splits

When looking at the data for splits there seems to be no rhyme or reason to how the splits are created while the built in Garmin "walking" app creates a split every 1 mile. Any way the Hiking app can create a spilt every 1 mile as well?
