Application: dwMap - Route Maps for Vivoactive and other watches

I have just published a route map app, dwApp, which I hope will fill a hole in the Connect IQ ecosystem.
Download from App Store

The primary goal was to offer a route map display and follow capability on the Vivoactive. The app however works on all Connect IQ devices and should be an very convenient way to send a route to the watch after creating it in MapMyRun, Ride with GPS, etc. It also offers an activity recording capability while you are using the routing feature.

I look forward to your requests, feedback, questions and bug reports, in this thread!

Features
- Uses a link code mechanism to link your watch to your account on http://dynamic.watch
- Your dynamic.watch account can be linked to Ride with GPS and Under Armour (MapMyRun/MapMyRide) to import routes automatically from those accounts, or you can import GPX and Garmin Connect routes
- Indicate which route is your current route, and you watch will automatically download it next time you start the app
- App displays a map view or a dashboard (data fields) view
- Map view has three zoom levels, and shows you current position and direction
- Dashboard view shows speed, distance, HR and other common activity stats
- App uses the normal built-in recording capability of the watch, and when you stop and save the activity it is sync'ed with Garmin Connect in the usual way
- App works without a data/phone connection, using the most recently downloaded route when offline
  • Ideas for improvement

I very much like this app. I think the following features could improve the application: 1. show on the map the starting point. 2. Allow the usage of this app without downloading a map. What I mean by that is that, I think it would be great if there would be mode where the app will record my trail and show it as I go. This way, when following a new trail, I can easily see how far (relative) I am from my starting point and what trail I hiked so far. Of course it would also be nice if afterwards this trail would be uploaded.

Thanks for the feature requests and I've added them to our list.

As you may have observed, although the app currently requires you to have a map downloaded, the map does not have to be of your actual route. Used in that way, you'll see your current position relative to your recent breadcrumbs whether you are near the route line or not. But we made a decision to limit the breadcrumb count to 63 max (when zoomed in) to limit memory use, so you get a sort of "comet's tail" of your recent path rather than going all the way back to the start.

However, if there was a mode where there was no map, we'd have a lot more memory available to us, so in that case we probably could show the start and breadcrumbs all the way to it, so that's the feature that I've added to the to-do list.

As you also may have observed, your track is recorded and uploaded into Garmin Connect Mobile also whether the current map is anywhere near where you are or not.

    Thanks again!
  • I am a new user of this app, on fenix 3 and 2 seconds after the set up of the app, I knew I would like it.

The help page on the web says "At the end of your activity, press Start/Stop to pause, and press the Return or Exit button, and choose the Save option to leave the app.", but pressing back button after the pause or during the activity always takes me back to app list (which means app is terminated?) and activity gets saved. There is no chance for me to choose the Save option or others.

In most of the cases, it probably is fine with me, but I think I will mistakenly press the back button during my activity and end up in terminating the activity against my will.

Why do not I see the Save option? Is it a limitation for fenix 3?

    Thanks.

Glad you like the app! That does sound like something unusual is happening on your Fenix3. It does not happen on the developers simulator for the Fenix3, which shows the confirmation screen before you can exit the app:

It might be worth checking you have the latest firmware on your watch, from https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=7623

Anyone else reading this seen this on their Fenix3?

    Thanks for your interest.
  • I used the app yesterday night and after the run, I could see the option message. So, it worked as intended.

But now I know how to reproduce this issue: if I start the activity before the watch gets the gps signal, it happens. When I first used this app, I was inside a building, so the watch could not get the signal.

BTW, I am using firmware 6.06 beta.

OK good, that is actually the intended behavior: it does not show the "Save/Exit" prompt if it never received any GPS data to save.
  • location finding

    hey there

when on iphone, the location button during route creation does not work. i cant find my actual position but have to add it manually, is this the intendet way of behaviour? because when "out there" its sometimes really not so easy to find yojr actual position without auto mode.

The intention was that you enter a place name in the box then press the location button to find it, rather than using it to find your current location.

However, I have just updated it, so that now if you leave the box empty and press the location button it will center the map on your current location, if available

Thanks for the excellent suggestion, and please give us a good review if you are enjoying the app!
  • Thank you for this app, this is what I bought this Garmin for, I was ready to buy a Suunto.

I have courses saved from previous runs, tried to import one to DynamicWatch, but it is slightly different format: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/10945880

The window on DynamicWatch calls for format https://connect.garmin.com/course/NNNN. How do I get my course into that format?

Our site actually only uses the number part, so try just entering 10945880 and it should work?

Thanks for your interest in the app!
