FONT License Clarification

This is more of a question to the Connect IQ team.

For the fonts available for use in CIQ watches, (a list is provided in the UXGuide) is it that a separate license is needed to be purchased by individual developers to be used in the watches?

The reason I ask this is there is a lot of difference from watches to watches in terms of fonts.

eg:
XTINY - Fenix 3 - Roboto 18px
XTINY - Fenix 5s - Roboto Condensed Regular 23px
XTINY - Fenix 5X - Roboto Condensed Regular 26px

This really adds to differing layouts needed for the same version of watches.

Is it possible to use the same fonts as what Garmin is already using across all the watches without needing to purchase separate individual licenses?

Thanks
  • The question is more pertinent to say, I would like to use BABAS Neues

(OK, there are some typos on the Garmin Connect‑IQ ">‑A">User Experience Guide: Appendix‑A page; I think the font's actual name is Bebas Neue.)

I think you can do it irrespective of Garmin's answer (or lack thereof) for Bebas Neue.

Steelfish is a different kettle of fish, so to speak.

Yes.. SteelFish or any other fonts being used in CIQ which needs a separate Embedding license
  • That's why my first Connect‑IQ watch face (which I was inspired to try and build in response to someone's question on the forum), which uses Steelfish, will not be published but only side-loaded onto my Forerunner watch, so that I'm not actually distributing the font data.
  • If a font is made available by the system on a particular device, then it is available for use in Connect IQ apps without a separate license. As ASmugDill points out, and as far as my understanding goes, this should include additional sizes you may wish to use even if those sizes are not already available by the system (i.e. mapped to one of the FONT_* constants).

However, if a developer wishes to use a font, such as Steelfish, on a device that does not already make the font available, the developer is subject to any license restrictions laid out for the font in question.

Does that sufficiently address the question?
  • yes it does. Thanks for official answer.
