Which emojis, non-ASCII unicode characters that can/can't be used and where

work don't work
store - App Title Heart
store - App Description Star①②③ᐳ⏎ᐃᐁ Trophy Heart

Don't work in store means you can't upload / save the change.

️Let me know in the comments if you know any more and I'll add them to the table.

I'm sure there will be new rows, 'cause I remember that there were similar problems using non-ASCII characters in Rez.Strings.AppName and maybe even depending on device, and some work in the device, some in the sim, some in the sim settings, etc... lots of categories. With time we can hopefully map them.

  • I've tested some more emojis within the apps by sending JSON containing them to the device. Emojis that seem to work on a Fenix5s and Vivoactive 3 are:   GrinningSmileySmileGrinLaughingSweat smileJoyRelaxedBlushInnocentSlight smileUpside downWinkRelievedHeart eyesKissing heartKissingKissing smiling eyesKissing closed eyesYumStuck out tongueStuck out tongue closed eyesStuck out tongue winking eyeNerdSunglassesBikeBicyclistSwimmerRunnerPoopScreamSobMedalClapThumbsupThumbsdownPrayBeerConfetti ballTadaFireHeartBroken heart100Heart️‍FireSparkling heartHearts

Though they only work in FONT_SMALL upwards - FONT_XTINY does render the placeholder.

On devices with CIQ 5.0.0 I've yet to find a Emoji that is not supported - no matter what font.

Note: None of them work in the Simulator on Linux or MacOS.

  • Regarding your post in developer discussion forum:

I tsted your emojis red heard Heart️ and stars Star️ in one of my app descriptions.
    Result:
heart does not work anymore (as well as other heart emojis)
    stars work!

  • The CIQ ecosystem is regressing even further to the past :/. (Saw a recent post on reddit which complained that CIQ seems like it's from 10-20 years ago, and it's hard for me to disagree.)

I mean, emojis don't even work properly on this forum platform (they're basically write-only and a subset of the standard set of emoji supported by modern devices/OSs):

    - they can't be quoted (they will show up as gigantic in the preview, and when you press submit, the forum will return an error). They can't even be properly copied from other posts (again they will be gigantic)

    - emojis rendered by the platform can't be properly copied and pasted into other apps or sites. For example, if I copy "Slight smile" into Notepad or VS Code on Windows, I get the text "Slight smile"

    - the 2 above points mean that as soon as you add emojis to your post, anyone who tries to copy or quote the text will have problems

    - the emojis you can use properly are restricted to the set of emojis that this forum platform supports (which is probably never going to be changed), as the platform renders the emoji as opposed to letting the OS do it (which ofc is the root cause of all the other problems)

For example, head shaking horizontally (2023) is rendered as follows: Slight smileLeft right arrow

This is how it's supposed to look on Windows (for example):

It's a sign of a super old and outdated forum/community platform where emoji support is provided (and limited) by the platform itself, as opposed to the OS (i.e. Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, etc). (It evokes a long-lost era when standard desktop OSs like Windows either had partial support for emoji or no support at all.)

Then again, this forum platform is terrible on mobile, and we've been living in a mobile-first world for 10+ years now. Most normal (non-techie) people I know refuse to use a web browser for certain things, let alone a computer/tablet. (Almost nobody under a certain age uses the Connect website, they all use the Connect app.)

When the forums were switched to this platform years ago, there were already 2 widely used modern forum platforms in existence: NodeBB and Discourse. But instead, this extremely old and busted platform was chosen.
