Access course data from data field

I'm frustrated by poor navigation in Instinct 2 - the user can't get information about distance to next custom course point (I'd like to put water stations for a given race on the map and see how many m/km  is left to next nearest water station). Is it possible to access course data from within data field? I'd love to make an elevation plot data field that shows only a fraction of upcoming elevation instead of having to cycle to build in elevation-plot screen (when you start a workout with navigation you can land with 6-10 screens depending on your config - not optimal and one can't change it per activity).

  • Actually I discovered a way around that which does not require coding your own datafield and included an acceptable tradeoff for me ;) soo, the issue is I wanted to have distance to next aid station or whatever on a course. Distance + name etc. You can achieve this with built in navigation fields (next waypoint name, distance to next etc). When you normally use them they mix directions with waypoints which makes them useless. However Garmin added an option to create a coruse without turn by turn notifications. When you disable them you are left only with your custom waypoints and have plenty of default fields to interact with them. I discovered this by accident literally on a sleepless night before an ultra run and it worked flawlessly. Hope it solves your issue :)

  • Oh, thank you!!  That option didn't show for me because it doesn't show for maps if you pick Course Type = Mountain Biking for some reason.  I switched to Course Type = Trail Running and now I can see the Turn Notifications option and turned it off.  Now everything works exactly how I want.  And can use this Trail Running map just fine for Mountain Biking activity.  Thanks for your help, this is perfect!
